Muiderpoort is an 18th-century city gate on Alexanderplein, where Sarphatistraat meets Plantage Middenlaan. It is the only surviving historic gate of its kind in Amsterdam and once formed part of the city’s defences. Look for its Louis XVI style design, created by architect Cornelis Rauws. The gate replaced an earlier structure and later welcomed Napoleon into Amsterdam in 1811. Set between Artis and the Tropenmuseum, it makes a brief history stop when exploring this part of the city.

A gate to Muiden

Muiderpoort stands on Alexanderplein, at the meeting point of Sarphatistraat and Plantage Middenlaan. The name means “gate to Muiden,” pointing to the direction of travel from Amsterdam. The gate formed part of the city’s fortifications, with bridges 264 and 265 on either side.

The present structure dates to 1770. It replaced a gate built in 1663, which collapsed in 1769 because of unstable foundations. Designed by Cornelis Rauws, the replacement was built in the Louis XVI style.

From city entrance to landmark

In 1811, Napoleon Bonaparte entered Amsterdam through Muiderpoort in a carriage pulled by eight white horses. The gate continued to serve as a thoroughfare until around 1903, when traffic was redirected over a nearby bridge.

Today, the structure is the only surviving historic city gate of its kind in Amsterdam. Its position between Artis and the Tropenmuseum makes it easy to include in a walk through the area.
