Central Zoo is in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, a short walk from Patan and an easy family outing in the Kathmandu Valley. Its animal collection includes Royal Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceroses, elephants, hippos and a range of birds, reptiles and fish. The central pond has paddle boats, and there is a playground for children. The zoo also runs wildlife education programs. Some enclosures have been criticized for limited space, so a visit can prompt useful conversations with children about animal welfare as well as conservation.

From private collection to public zoo

Central Zoo

Central Zoo began as a private animal collection established in 1932 by Rana Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher. It opened to the public in 1956 and is managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation. Located in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, it is the only zoo in Nepal.

The zoo’s role includes wildlife conservation education. Its Friends of Zoo program teaches schoolchildren about environmental protection. The grounds also include a rescue and rehabilitation center for injured wildlife.

The collection includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Among the animals visitors may see are Royal Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceroses, red pandas, chimpanzees, elephants and hippos. An aviary holds a variety of birds, and the zoo has an aquarium with subtropical fish.

The central pond is a focal point of the grounds, with paddle boating available. Families can also use the children’s playground, while picnic sheds and shaded seating provide places to rest. Paths connect the exhibits and facilities around the zoo.

Some enclosures have drawn concern over their size and surroundings. Do not feed the animals, even if one approaches the edge of an enclosure; signs prohibit feeding. The visit can be a chance to discuss both the animals you see and the conditions they need.
