Fundidora Park

Fundidora Park is a public park in Monterrey on the grounds of the Fundidora de Fierro y Acero steel foundry, which operated from 1900 until 1986.

Fundidora Park is a public park in Monterrey on the grounds of the Fundidora de Fierro y Acero steel foundry, which operated from 1900 until 1986. The furnaces, rails and machinery were kept and now stand among lawns, fountains and walking paths. Entry is free. Inside are the Horno³ steel museum, a lake, cycling lanes, playgrounds and venues for concerts and exhibitions. Most people come to walk, cycle or picnic, and to reach the museum viewpoint over downtown Monterrey.

From steel foundry to public park

Fundidora Park
Fundidora Park

The park stands on the site of the Fundidora de Fierro y Acero company, which ran here from 1900 until 1986. Monterrey owes much of its economic growth to the steel industry, and the foundry played a major part in that. After the company closed, the area was converted into a public park with cultural, business and entertainment uses.

The site lies in a historic workers' colony east of downtown. It is now recognised as an industrial archaeological site, and the park is sometimes described as a museum of industrial archaeology. The intention was to give families in Nuevo León a place to rest and play sport, alongside training activities, business meetings and cultural programmes.

Horno³ and the steel museum

The Museo del Acero Horno³ is built into Furnace No. 3. It is an interactive museum that explains where steel comes from and follows Monterrey's change from an industrial centre to a cultural city. It has an exhibition area and a viewpoint from which you can see downtown Monterrey. The view from the chimney is the part of the visit most worth planning for.

A zip line circuit is also installed at the museum. The first line starts at the top of the furnace, 70 metres up. Museum admission is separate from the free park entry and was about 200 Mexican pesos at the last report we have.

The museum can also be hired for private events such as catering or after-parties. In that case the whole museum has to be booked.

Walking the grounds

The industrial past is part of the scenery. Old machines, rails, steam engines and gears lie beside flower beds and fountains, and the steel structures around the green areas show what the site was used for. Kinetic art displays and sculptures are spread along the paths. The Inukshuk, a stone figure of Arctic origin, is one of the sculptures people notice.

There is a lake, and boats are available on the water. Other facilities include cycling lanes, an ice rink, a skateboarding area, and baseball, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. Picnic tables and barbecue grills are provided. Outdoor workout stations and vending machines are placed around the park, and the playground equipment is kept clean.

Culture and events inside the park

Several cultural venues share the grounds. The park has an art cinema known as the Cineteca de Nuevo León, an art gallery with two exhibition rooms, a media library and a children's workshop. A theater seats 350 people. The Muscera museum is also here.

The Monterrey Arena hosts concerts and other programmes, and the park has indoor courts for soccer and basketball. For children, Parque Plaza Sésamo is an amusement area based on the television show. Because the park holds expositions, conventions and plays for limited runs, what you find on a given day can differ from the permanent attractions.

Linking up with the Santa Lucía Riverwalk

Fundidora Park is the eastern end of the Paseo Santa Lucía, an artificial canal that connects the park with Macroplaza downtown. You can walk the paths beside it or take a boat between the two. Many visitors combine Macroplaza, the riverwalk and the park into one day.

The canal is lined with open-air art and hosts musical events. If you arrive by boat from Macroplaza, you reach the park without dealing with parking.

Facilities and access

The park has free and paid parking, including garages and street parking, and public restrooms. The entrance, the restrooms and a parking area are wheelchair accessible. Card and mobile payments are available at some points, though it is sensible to carry some cash for the food carts and small stands.

The park also has artisan markets where handmade goods are sold, and food carts and fast food stands for a quick meal.
