En resumen

The easiest way to see El Arco is a boat from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Go in the morning for calmer water, choose a water taxi for a short trip or a longer tour for sea lions and a snorkel stop, and swim only where the captain says it is safe. The area charges a daily park fee, listed at 125 pesos per person. Divorce Beach on the Pacific side is not for swimming, and officials closed the arch area for a time in August 2026 when the swell rose.

El Arco, the rock arch at the tip of the Baja peninsula, is the view that defines Cabo San Lucas, and the way to see it is by boat from the marina. This page, a companion to the Cabo San Lucas travel guide, covers the boat options, the best time to go and the swim rules at the nearby beaches, for anyone building a stay in Mexico around a day on the water.

The arch sits where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific. The calm side is where boats stop and Lover's Beach lies, and the open Pacific side has strong waves and currents. Knowing which side you are on is the difference between a pleasant outing and a risky one.

What boat options are there?

There are four common ways to go. A water taxi is a short ride from the marina to the arch and Lover's Beach, and it is the cheapest and quickest. A glass-bottom or sightseeing boat adds commentary and a loop past the sea lion rocks. A snorkel or kayak tour adds time in the water. A sunset cruise gives you the arch in evening light, usually with drinks.

Most operators sell trips from counters along the marina, and many are also listed online. A water taxi can be booked at the dock, but longer tours are worth comparing in advance, because inclusions differ. Ask what is included, how long you will spend at each stop and whether the boat is small enough to get close to the arch.

The times in the table are typical ranges, not quotes, so confirm with the operator. Choose the water taxi if you only want the arch and a short beach stop, and a tour if you want to snorkel or see more of the coast.

What does it cost, and what is the park fee?

The arch and the beaches around it sit inside the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area, a federal protected area. Visitors pay a daily fee per person, and the official page lists it at 125 pesos per person per day, with free entry for children under 12, seniors and people with disabilities and discounts for students and for Mexican nationals and foreign residents. The same page says visitors need an entry wristband and must follow the area's rules, including the whale-watching guidelines in season. See the CONANP page for the area for the current fee.

Boat prices vary by operator, boat size, season and what is included. When you compare, ask for the total with the fee, drinks, gear and any marina charges, so you are comparing the same thing.

When is the best time to go?

The morning is usually best. The water is often calmer before the afternoon wind builds, and there are fewer boats around the arch. If you take a late tour, ask the captain about sea conditions before you board, and be ready for a change of route if swells are high.

The season shapes the trip as well. Winter, from about December to April, is also whale-watching season, with separate tours from the marina. Summer is hotter. The US National Hurricane Center lists the eastern Pacific hurricane season as 15 May to 30 November, with activity peaking in late August and most systems between late June and early October, so August to October is the likeliest time for storms to cancel boat trips. Allow a flexible day. Our guide on where to stay in Cabo San Lucas shows how the season affects room prices.

What is Lover's Beach?

Lover's Beach, or Playa del Amor, is a small stretch of sand tucked beside the arch, reached only by boat. On the Sea of Cortez side the water can be calm and clear, and the beach is a popular stop for water taxis and tours. It is crowded when boats arrive, and there are no shops or shade beyond what you carry.

Bring water, a hat and shoes you do not mind wetting, because landings can be through the surf. Take your trash with you, and keep off the rocks. The beach is small, so go early or accept that you will share it with other groups. If it is too busy, a short swim from the boat near the arch can be as good.

Can the arch area close?

Yes. In early August 2026, the municipal civil protection office, with the navy and the port and coastal-zone authorities, temporarily restricted access to the arch area and Divorce Beach because of strong undercurrents and unpredictable waves. Black flags and signs went up, and the restriction covered boats and kayaks approaching the area as well as walking beneath the arch. The officials warned that large waves could drag people out to sea.

Such closures are temporary and depend on the swell, but they show why you should not pay in full for a trip that cannot move. Ask the operator what happens if the arch area is closed on your day: a good answer is a refund, a reschedule or a substitute route along the coast. If a closure is in force, a snorkel stop at another bay or a sunset sail along the marina can still make the outing worthwhile.

Is it safe to swim here?

The beach is divided by a narrow strip of sand. On one side the Sea of Cortez can be calm. On the other, the Pacific side, often called Divorce Beach, has strong waves and currents, and it is not for swimming. Many visitors wade, then step to the other side to see the waves, but the surf can knock people down quickly.

Follow the captain's advice and watch for flags or warnings. Swim only on the calm side, stay close to shore and keep an eye on children. If you are unsure, skip the swim and enjoy the view. Check your cover for water activities on our travel insurance page, since policies differ on what they exclude.

How should you book?

Decide what you want first: a short look, a snorkel stop or a sunset. Then compare operators on the same points: what is included (drinks, snorkel gear, a guide), how long the trip lasts, how many passengers the boat carries and what happens if the sea is too rough. Read recent reviews for the specific boat and ask about a refund or a reschedule if the trip is canceled.

Book ahead for December to April and for holiday weeks, when boats sell out. If you can, take a morning slot. Skip any offer tied to a timeshare presentation, and be cautious of very low prices at the dock, since quality varies. An eSIM helps you check confirmations and weather on the day, and our getting around Mexico page covers transfers.

Mistakes to avoid and what to skip

The first mistake is booking the cheapest seat without asking where the boat stops. Some trips cruise past the arch and turn back, while others anchor for a swim, and the difference decides whether you get your money's worth. The second is going in the afternoon on a windy day and expecting the same calm water you saw in a photo. The third is walking toward Divorce Beach for a swim. The Pacific side is the dangerous one, and the authorities have closed it when the swell rises.

The fourth is paying a street tout who offers a very low price and then adds charges on the boat. Buy from a marina counter or an operator's own page, and get the total in writing. The fifth is overpacking: a large bag is a nuisance on a small boat and in a wet landing.

What to skip: if you have a bad back, motion sickness or a very young child, skip the long snorkel tour and take the water taxi at the calmest time of day. If the arch area is closed on your day, skip the beach landing and ask for a coastal cruise instead.

What should you bring and how should you behave?

Bring a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, drinking water, a light layer for the wind and a dry bag for your phone. Wear shoes that can get wet, since landing at Lover's Beach can involve stepping through shallow surf. Carry a small amount of cash for tips and for drinks on the beach, and keep valuables to a minimum, because the boat and the sand are not secure.

On the water, follow the captain's instructions, wear a life jacket where they ask you to, and do not feed or touch sea lions or other wildlife. Keep off the rocks, which are slippery and used by animals, and take your trash back to the boat. If you have a child or a weak swimmer in the group, tell the operator so that they can plan the stop. A calm morning can become a rough afternoon, so be ready to change the plan.

Is the boat trip suitable for children?

Most operators take children, but the boats are open, the landing at Lover's Beach can be wet and the sun is strong. A water taxi is the simplest choice with young children, because it is short and easy to cut off if someone is tired. A longer tour with a snorkel stop suits older children who swim well. Ask the operator about life jackets in child sizes before you book, and keep an adult within reach whenever anyone is in the water.

What other water trips can you add?

Whale-watching tours leave from the marina in winter, usually from about December to April. A sunset sail is a good evening option. For real snorkeling, the protected bays along the Corridor, such as Chileno and Santa María, have calmer water than the arch, and a visit to Cabo Pulmo gives you a coral reef, though it is about two hours away.

If you are choosing a base for a stay built around boats, the marina and Medano Beach are the closest, and our Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo comparison explains when it is worth sleeping in the quieter town. Whatever you pick, check the visas and entry rules for your passport before you fly.
