En resumen

Stay in Cabo San Lucas for boats, Medano Beach and nightlife. Stay in San José del Cabo for a quieter historic center, galleries and an easier airport run. They are about 30 to 40 minutes apart, so base in one and visit the other, or split a longer trip between them.

Which town should you stay in?

For most first-time visitors, Cabo San Lucas is the more convenient base, and San José del Cabo is the calmer one. Cabo San Lucas has the marina, Medano Beach and most of the nightlife, plus boat trips to the arch. San José del Cabo has a historic plaza, galleries and a quieter pace, and the airport is on its side of the coast.

The two towns are about 30 to 40 minutes apart by car, so the choice is less about distance than about mood. The Cabo San Lucas travel guide covers the busier town, and the San José del Cabo travel guide covers the quieter one. For the wider trip, see the Mexico guide.

If you cannot decide, pick by the evening you want. A late dinner and a drink on a busy waterfront means Cabo San Lucas. A quiet meal on a plaza and a gallery stroll means San José del Cabo.

How do they compare side by side?

The table compares the two on the points that most often decide a base. Cells are short on purpose, and the sections below explain the trade-offs.

Choose Cabo San Lucas if...

Choose Cabo San Lucas if you want a beach holiday with plenty to do. The marina has boats to El Arco and whale-watching tours in winter, Medano Beach has calm swimming and beach clubs, and the streets behind them are full of restaurants and bars. You can walk to most of it from a hotel near the marina or the beach.

Land’s End, Cabo San Lucas

It is also the better base for groups and for first-time visitors, because everything is close. The trade-off is that it is busy and noisy in peak season, particularly on cruise days and weekends. Rooms near the marina cost less than on the sand but have more night noise, so light sleepers should look at hillside areas. Our where to stay in Cabo San Lucas guide compares the four main bases, and the El Arco boat tour guide explains the main outing.

Choose San José del Cabo if...

Choose San José del Cabo if you prefer a slower pace. The old center around the plaza has restaurants, shops and a mission church, and a growing number of galleries add to the sense of a town rather than a resort. Evenings are quiet, and the pace suits couples and anyone who wants to read, eat and walk.

The airport is a shorter transfer from San José del Cabo, which helps on arrival and departure days. Many resorts and villas also sit nearby along the coast. The drawback is the beach. The town beach often has strong surf, so swimming usually means a resort pool or a protected bay on the Corridor, and boat tours mostly start from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Galleries in the old center hold an evening art walk in the high season, but the day and the months change, so confirm them with the local tourism office before you plan around it.

What about the beaches?

The beaches differ more than the towns do. Medano, in Cabo San Lucas, is the main swimming beach and the easiest place for families. Beaches facing the open Pacific, including Divorce Beach by the arch, have strong currents and are not for swimming. San José del Cabo's town beach is more exposed, so many visitors head to the Corridor, where some protected bays have calmer water for swimming and snorkeling.

If swimming is your priority, choose Cabo San Lucas or a resort on a protected bay along the Corridor. If you are happy with a pool and a short drive to a beach, San José del Cabo works. Always ask your hotel or a local operator about conditions on the day, and follow lifeguard flags where they are posted. For a real snorkeling day, Cabo Pulmo is a longer drive but a very different experience from the arch. It is a national park, and the CONANP page lists a daily fee of 125 pesos per person, so budget for it on top of the transport. Divorce Beach, beside the arch, has been closed by local authorities when the swell rises, as it was in August 2026, which is one more reason to swim on Medano or at a resort.

Can you do both in one trip?

Yes, and many travelers do. A week works well as a split: three or four nights in San José del Cabo for galleries, a slower pace and an easy arrival, then three or four in Cabo San Lucas for boats and the beach. Do it in reverse if you want to finish quietly before a flight.

If you have only a few nights, keep one base and day-trip to the other. The drive is short, and a taxi or a rental car makes it easy. Add Todos Santos, a Pacific-side town about an hour from Cabo San Lucas, if you have a car and a spare day. Check the getting around Mexico page for rental and transfer options.

How do you get between the two towns?

The coast highway links the two towns, and the drive takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis and shuttles run between them, and public buses serve the route too, but a rental car or a booked transfer is easier if you have luggage or a flight. Ride apps and taxis are available in both towns, though fares and availability vary, so ask your hotel for the usual rate before you set out.

If you plan to move between the towns during a stay, check the transfer times for your arrival and departure days. San José del Cabo is the shorter ride from the airport, so a split stay that starts there and finishes in Cabo San Lucas saves time on the first day, while the reverse makes the last night more relaxed. Our getting around Mexico page covers car rental and transfers.

Which traveler suits which town?

Groups of friends and anyone who wants nightlife and boats should pick Cabo San Lucas. Families with children who want a calm beach and easy restaurants should also lean toward Cabo San Lucas, with a hotel on Medano Beach. Couples who prefer galleries, a historic plaza and a slower evening should consider San José del Cabo.

Travelers on a short trip will usually be happier with a single base. If you only have three or four nights, choose the town that matches your priority and visit the other for a meal. Those staying a week or more benefit from splitting, and that is also the best way to add Todos Santos or Cabo Pulmo without long drives from one end of the cape.

What changes with the season in each town

The two towns do not feel the same in every month. From about December to April, whale-watching boats leave the Cabo San Lucas marina, nightlife is at its busiest and rooms cost the most in both towns. San José del Cabo stays calm even then, which makes it the better winter base for couples who want to avoid the marina crowd. From May to early autumn, heat and humidity build, and the eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November according to the US National Hurricane Center, with activity peaking in late August. In that stretch, a base with a pool and a flexible rate matters more than a base near the water.

Boats are the other seasonal difference. Cabo San Lucas holds the marina departures for the arch and for whale watching, so a stay in San José del Cabo in winter means a morning transfer for each boat day. If boats are the point of the trip, sleep in Cabo San Lucas. If the old center and a slow breakfast are the point, sleep in San José and accept the drive.

Mistakes people make with the two towns

The first mistake is choosing San José del Cabo for swimming because it has a beach. The town beach is exposed, and the calm water is at Medano in Cabo San Lucas or in protected bays on the Corridor. The second is choosing Cabo San Lucas for quiet because of a hotel photo. The marina and Medano are the busiest stretch of the cape, and quiet there means a room well back from the music.

The third is splitting a short trip. Two nights in each town costs a transfer and two check-ins and leaves little time at either end. The fourth is expecting a taxi to be cheap between the towns. The ride is 30 to 40 minutes, so ask the fare first or book a transfer.

Before you go

Whichever town you pick, book early for the winter months and compare cover on our travel insurance page if you travel in the storm season. Add an eSIM for maps and ride apps on arrival, and check the visas and entry rules for your passport before you fly.
