Wied il-Għasri

Wied il-Għasri is a narrow sea gorge on Gozo’s northern coast, where a valley cuts through cliffs to a small pebble beach. Steep, narrow steps lead down to the water, so the descent takes effort, but the inlet is a striking place to swim, snorkel or photograph the cliffs. Underwater caves, including Cathedral Cave, also draw divers and snorkellers. Explore the gorge and the surrounding coastline for different views, and bring snorkeling gear if you plan to look below the surface.

A valley opening onto the sea

Wied il-Għasri begins near Ta’ Dbieġi Hill and winds through the village of l-Għasri. It continues between iż-Żebbuġ and Ta’ Ġurdan Hill before reaching the northern coast, where cliffs frame the narrow inlet. The gorge runs inland from the sea to a small beach, creating a sheltered route between the rock walls.

At sea level, the shore is small and pebbly, with sand and pebbles beneath the water. The setting suits a swim or time by the water, but reaching it means descending steep, narrow steps. The stairs are demanding, so plan for the climb back up as well.

Snorkelling and underwater caves

The gorge is a destination for snorkellers and divers drawn to its underwater formations and marine life. Cathedral Cave, also called Blue Dome, lies between Reqqa Point and Forna Point. The caves along the canyon are a reason to bring snorkeling gear if you intend to explore beneath the surface.

Above water, the cliffs offer changing perspectives as you walk the coastline and approach the gorge. For a quieter visit, go early in the morning or during winter. Take care on the steps and leave the natural area clean.
