At 51, Lorong Hang Jebat, near Jonker Street, the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum traces the voyages of Ming Dynasty admiral Cheng Ho, also known as Zheng He, and his links with Melaka. Across three floors, see maritime exhibits, model ships and artifacts, with English explanations that connect China, Melaka and the spread of Islam in Southeast Asia. Start with the short introductory film, then take time to explore the displays on the admiral’s expeditions and the region’s history.

Cheng Ho and Melaka

The museum follows the life and voyages of Cheng Ho, the Ming Dynasty admiral also known as Zheng He. Between 1405 and 1433, he led seven expeditions across the sea, travelling to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Melaka was among the places he visited, and accounts of his journeys place the city within a wider history of maritime exchange.

The displays also set Cheng Ho’s story against the history of Melaka and its connections with China. One theme is the spread of Islam in Southeast Asia. The museum presents the admiral’s influence as part of the region’s cultural history, alongside the movement of people and goods.

Model ships and maritime memorabilia help tell the story of the expeditions. The collection also includes artifacts associated with different periods and places Cheng Ho’s fleet encountered. Exhibits on a shipwreck and the excavation of a largely intact treasure ship add an archaeological angle to the maritime history.

Not every display focuses directly on Cheng Ho. Objects such as Javanese shadow puppets and gamelan instruments appear alongside material about the places connected with his travels. The arrangement gives the museum a broad scope, though some sections have a more direct link to the admiral than others. English explanations accompany many of the exhibits.
