A public park with a long history

Perdana Botanical Gardens

Perdana Botanical Gardens began as Kuala Lumpur’s first large-scale recreational park in the late 19th century. The garden’s origins are dated to 1888 in some accounts and 1889 in others, so the exact opening year is not consistent. It was once called Lake Gardens, or Taman Tasik Perdana, and was later developed as a botanical garden with collections of tropical plants.

The grounds now form part of Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park. Their scale gives the visit a different feel from a small city garden: landscaped areas sit alongside wooded patches, open lawns and water. Mature trees are among the draws, and the garden’s planted collections include both local and exotic species.

Garden sections and landmarks

The Orchid Garden and Hibiscus Garden are two of the best-known planted areas. Other named sections include the Sunken Garden, Herbarium, Herb and Spice Garden, Heliconia Garden, bamboo garden and Forest Tree Collection. Their variety makes it easy to shape a visit around flowers, plant collections or a longer walk through the grounds.

Laman Perdana is another distinctive stop. Its canopy has a form inspired by the surrounding greenery, and sunlight passing through it can create patterns on the ground. Lakes, fountains, ponds and landscaped paths add quieter places to pause between sections. The grounds also include a deer park and a large playground, giving families options beyond the garden displays.

Planning a walk around the grounds

The paths are used for walking, jogging and cycling, and clear signs help visitors find their way between sections. The terrain is not uniformly flat: expect some slopes as you move through the landscaped hills. Because the grounds cover a broad area, a short visit will not reach every corner. Pick a few sections in advance, or leave extra time for a slower loop and stops along the way.

The garden is free to enter. Nearby attractions within the wider park, including KL Bird Park and KL Butterfly Park, are separate destinations and may charge admission. If you plan to visit them as well, check their current entry arrangements independently. Early morning is a useful time to start a walk, when the paths are quieter and the air is cooler. Bring drinking water and snacks for a longer stay.
