Vērmane Garden is a public park in central Rīga, just outside the Old Town. Its paths wind past flower beds, mature trees, fountains and sculptures, with lawns and benches for a quiet break between city sights. Look for the monument to Anna Vērmane, who donated the land, and the garden’s Rotunda and Lion Fountain. Families can use the playground, while the open-air stage hosts concerts and seasonal events. Cafés and tea rooms nearby make it easy to linger over a drink.

A garden with a history

Vērmane Garden

The garden was established in 1814 on land donated by Anna Gertrud Vērmane. Her contribution is marked by a monument in the park. The name Vērmane is a Latvian adaptation of the garden’s original German name.

At around five hectares, the garden sits just outside Rīga’s Old Town. Its paths, trees and planted areas offer a change of pace from the surrounding city streets.

Take time to wander rather than crossing the garden in a straight line. Paths pass flower beds, lawns and mature trees, with benches along the way. The rose area is a particular draw when the flowers are in bloom.

Look for the Rotunda and the Lion Fountain among the garden’s architectural and sculptural details. The fountain and planted areas give you natural places to pause, while the garden’s entrances connect it with nearby streets and the canal area.

Events and a break with children

An open-air stage hosts concerts, including free performances, and the garden also holds seasonal events such as fairs and markets. The programme changes through the year, so check what is scheduled if you want to time your visit around an event.

Families can stop at the playground, and the lawns and benches leave room for a slower visit. Cafés and a tea house in and around the garden provide places to sit down for a drink or a light meal. The park is open around the clock, and it has public toilets.
