The building at Torņa iela 1 was constructed in the early 19th century as a customs warehouse and arsenal. Built in the late Russian Classicist style, it was later adapted for museum use. Today it is an exhibition hall for Latvian and international art.

The site was built in 1832 to store weapons for the Russian tsar’s army. Its original purpose and later use as an exhibition space give the building a story beyond the works on its walls.
