En resumen

Stay near Kawaramachi for a first trip with food and shops on foot. Choose Kyoto Station if you have an early train or several day trips. Gion suits temples at dawn and a ryokan night. Arashiyama and Nijo are quieter second bases. Since March 2026 Kyoto's lodging tax runs from ¥200 to ¥10,000 per person, per night.

How to choose

The short answer for the Kyoto travel guide is Kawaramachi if you want food and shops on foot, and Kyoto Station if you have trains to catch. Kyoto is spread out, and the best temples sit at the edges, so the base you pick decides how much of your day goes to buses and subways. This guide compares five bases across Japan's old capital by walk times, the airport train, price band and who each area suits.

Two things drive the choice. The first is your arrival: Kansai Airport connects to Kyoto Station on the JR Haruka in roughly 75–80 minutes, and every other area below adds a subway, bus or taxi leg after that. The second is how you like your evenings. Kyoto's center shuts earlier than Osaka's, so the area where you sleep is also where you will probably eat, and some of these bases are much quieter after 8pm than others.

Price bands here are relative, per night for a double room: $ is a plain business hotel, $$ a newer mid-range hotel or small guesthouse, $$$ a boutique hotel, machiya townhouse or ryokan. Rooms in every area climb in cherry blossom season (late March to early April), Golden Week, the July Gion Matsuri and the autumn color weeks in November, so book first and plan the rest around the room.

Kyoto Station is the transport hub, and it makes the most sense if your days are built around trains. The Haruka to Kansai Airport, the shinkansen, the JR line to Nara and the JR line to Fushimi Inari all leave from here, and JR Inari Station is about 9 minutes away on the Nara line. The Sagano line reaches Saga-Arashiyama in about 11 minutes by rapid train.

The trade-off is atmosphere. The area is modern, with large hotels, department stores and a big underground mall, but it sits away from the old streets. Central Kyoto is a short subway ride and walk away, so an evening in Kawaramachi is easy but not on your doorstep. Rooms are often good value, especially in business hotels, and luggage is easy to handle on arrival and departure days.

Evítalo si you want old streets and lantern-lit lanes outside your door.

Stay here for a short Kyoto stop when easy luggage matters more than old streets.

Kawaramachi is the downtown, and for a first trip it is the easiest answer. Nishiki Market, Pontocho's lantern-lit alley, Shijo's department stores and Teramachi's covered arcade are all within a short walk. Gion is a little farther, across the Kamo River. The Hankyu line runs from Kawaramachi to Osaka-umeda in about 45 minutes, so it also works for day trips toward Osaka and Kobe.

Hotels here range from compact business rooms to well-run mid-range places and a scattering of machiya guesthouses, and there are more of them than in Gion. Streets close to Pontocho and the bars are lively until late, while blocks a few minutes west toward Karasuma are calmer. If you want the food scene, book within a few minutes of Shijo and Kawaramachi.

Evítalo si you want quiet after midnight, or you will spend most days at the far temples.

3. Gion

Gion and the Higashiyama hills are where most people picture Kyoto: preserved wooden streets, Yasaka Shrine, Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji. Stay here if you want the sights at opening, before the day-trip crowds arrive, and a quiet walk home after dinner. This is where ryokan, machiya townhouses and boutique hotels cluster, and staying in one is a good way to spend a special night.

Prices run higher than elsewhere, and chain business hotels are few. The Keihan line from Gion-Shijo reaches Osaka's Yodoyabashi in about 48 minutes, but the JR stations are farther, so trains to Nara or the airport take more effort than from Kyoto Station. Some private lanes in Gion are closed to visitors, and signs say so; stay on the public streets and give way to anyone in kimono.

Evítalo si you need late-night food choices, a large hotel lobby or a quick link to JR trains.

The bamboo grove in Arashiyama, western Kyoto: a group of people walking through a bamboo forest
The bamboo grove in Arashiyama, western Kyoto

Arashiyama sits on the western edge of the city, along the Katsura River. Its bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji are busy from mid-morning, but the streets are calm at dawn and after dark, which is the point of staying here. It suits a second or third night, a slow morning by the river, or travelers who prefer a small inn with a view to a central location.

The drawbacks are distance and dinner. The JR Sagano line and the Hankyu and Randen lines connect to central Kyoto (the Hankyu route changes trains at Katsura), but the last trains run earlier than the city's nightlife, and many restaurants close early once the day trippers leave. Ryokan and small hotels are the main options, with a few larger resorts along the river.

Evítalo si you plan to spend most evenings in central Kyoto or want an early train elsewhere.

5. Nijo

Best for

Nijo covers the streets around Nijo Castle and the Nishijin weaving district to the north. It is a residential Kyoto of low houses, small cafés and restored townhouses, and several machiya have become guesthouses. The Tozai subway line crosses the city to Higashiyama, and JR Nijo Station is a short ride from Kyoto Station on the Sagano (Sanin) line.

It is the choice for people who would rather walk through a real neighborhood than a tourist street. It also suits repeat visitors who have already seen the main temples. Dinner options are scattered, so plan meals in advance or take the subway to Kawaramachi in the evening. Machiya rooms tend to be small, with steps and thin walls, so read the room description before booking.

Evítalo si you want a big station hub outside the door or many restaurants within a few minutes.

Kyoto lodging tax and property types

Kyoto raised its accommodation tax on March 1, 2026. It is charged per person, per night, on a sliding scale by the nightly accommodation fee per person: ¥200 under ¥6,000, ¥400 from ¥6,000 to ¥19,999, ¥1,000 from ¥20,000 to ¥49,999, ¥4,000 from ¥50,000 to ¥99,999, and ¥10,000 from ¥100,000. If your nightly fee is under ¥20,000 per person, that means ¥200 or ¥400, but a ryokan night can attract a much larger charge.

The rates come from the Kyoto tourism site. Property type matters as much as the tax. A ryokan usually includes a multi-course dinner and breakfast, so compare it against a room plus two meals rather than a room alone. A business hotel is compact and cheaper. A machiya is a converted townhouse, with tatami floors and a small footprint but often no elevator.

When to book, and Kyoto or Osaka?

Book earliest for the cherry blossom weeks in late March and early April, Golden Week, the Gion Matsuri in July (the main processions are on July 17 and 24), Obon in mid-August and the autumn color weeks in November. Ryokan and central machiya sell out first, while business hotels near Kyoto Station hold rooms longer. For quieter months, see the best time to visit Japan.

If you are still deciding between cities, remember that Osaka is about 30 minutes from Kyoto by JR Special Rapid. Osaka's where to stay guide covers the alternative, and rooms there usually cost less. A sensible split is two or three nights in Kyoto for temples, then Osaka for the rest. For day trips from Kyoto, Nara is the easiest half day, and Kyoto without the queues lists quieter swaps.

You will not need a pass for most of Kyoto. See whether a Kansai pass pays off before you buy, and price the JR Pass against single tickets. Compare an eSIM for Japan and travel insurance for Japan before you fly.

Mistakes to avoid when choosing a base

The most common mistake is booking Gion for convenience. It is beautiful at dawn, but it has few chain hotels and no JR station, so a morning train or an airport run costs more effort than from Kyoto Station. The second is booking a distant base for a short stay: with only two nights, Arashiyama or Nijo spends a large share of your time on transfers. The third is choosing by price alone. A cheaper room far from a station can cost more once you add daily bus rides and taxis.

If rain is forecast, favor a base with a covered route to a station, such as Kyoto Station or Kawaramachi, because temple days turn into museum and market days with little planning. If you travel with heavy luggage, start at Kyoto Station even if you plan to move to Gion for the second half of the stay. Splitting a longer visit into two bases, one for arrival and one for atmosphere, is often better than forcing one area to do everything.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the best area to stay in Kyoto for a first visit?

Kawaramachi, for most people. Nishiki Market, Pontocho and Shijo are on foot, Gion is a short walk across the river, and Hankyu trains reach Osaka in about 45 minutes. If your first or last day has a train to catch, Kyoto Station is the simpler choice.

Is it better to stay near Kyoto Station or in Gion?

Near the station for transport, in Gion for atmosphere. The station area is convenient for the Haruka airport train, the shinkansen, Nara and Fushimi Inari (about 9 minutes by JR), but evenings are quiet. Gion puts you among the temples of Higashiyama, with fewer chain hotels and higher prices.

How many nights should I stay in Kyoto?

Three nights cover the major temples, Gion and Arashiyama at an easy pace. Two is workable with early starts. Add one night if you want a day trip to Nara, or stay longer and use Kyoto as a base for Osaka too.

Is Arashiyama a good place to stay?

For a second stay or a slow morning at the bamboo grove, yes. The area empties out after the day crowds leave, and dinner choices are limited. It is about 11 minutes from Kyoto Station by rapid train on the JR Sagano line.

Is there a hotel tax in Kyoto?

Yes. Since March 1, 2026 it is charged per person, per night, from ¥200 for stays under ¥6,000 per person up to ¥10,000 at ¥100,000 or more per person. Check whether your booking includes it.

Should I stay in Osaka instead of Kyoto?

If food and nightlife matter more than temples at dawn, yes. Osaka rooms are often cheaper, and the JR Special Rapid takes about 30 minutes between the two cities. If Kyoto is the point of your trip, sleep in Kyoto.
