Stay in Namba for a first trip built around food and nightlife. Pick Umeda if Kyoto, Kobe or Himeji fill your calendar. Tennoji suits an airport-first or last night, and Shin-Osaka suits an early shinkansen. Compare the nightly total after tax, and check airport timetables before you book.

How to choose
Osaka is compact and the subway is simple, so no area is a bad base. What changes is how your evenings feel and how much time you spend on trains. Three decisions settle most choices: which half of the city your evenings belong to, which rail line you will ride most, and how you arrive and leave.
Two lines do most of the work. The Midōsuji subway links Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba and Tennoji in a single north-south run. JR lines leave Osaka Station, in the Umeda district, for Kyoto, Kobe and Himeji. Pick your base by which of the two you will ride more. If you plan to stay in the city and eat your way through it, that is the Midōsuji line and the south. If you plan three or four day trips, it is JR and the north. The guide to day trips from Osaka shows which station each trip leaves from.
The third decision is arrival. Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an island in Osaka Bay, well south of the center. Its own access page lists the main rail options: Nankai trains to Namba, and JR trains to Tennoji, Osaka Station and Shin-Osaka. Itami (ITM) is the domestic airport on the north side of the city. If you land late or fly out early, the rail line that serves your hotel matters more than a nicer lobby.
The price bands in this guide are rough, relative labels for a double room per night, not quotes: $ is a plain business hotel, $$ a newer business or mid-range hotel, and $$$ an upscale or boutique hotel. Rates change by date, so check the current price for your own dates before you book. Rates across all six areas tend to climb in cherry blossom season, in Golden Week and on weekends when a big concert or event fills the city. If your dates fall in one of those windows, book the room first and plan the rest of the trip around it.
1. Namba
Namba is the Osaka most people picture: the canal at Dōtonbori, the running man sign near Ebisubashi and takoyaki stands that stay busy into the night. It is loud on weekend evenings and much quieter once you are a couple of blocks from the canal. That contrast is the whole planning question for Namba: sleep on the calm side of the district and walk to the noise when you want it.
For sleeping, look at the streets east of Midōsuji and north of Namba Station rather than the lanes that run straight off the canal. You stay in easy walking distance of Dōtonbori but away from the bars that spill onto the pavement. Nankai Namba is the terminus for the airport trains, which makes this the simplest area on arrival and departure days. KIX's official access page gives about 34 minutes on the Rapi:t α, about 39 on the Rapi:t β and about 43 on the Airport Express.
Namba also puts you next to the city's best-known eating streets. Kuromon Market sits by Nippombashi Station, Hōzen-ji Yokochō is a stone-paved lane near the canal, and Ura-Namba's small bars are close to the station. The guide to eating when Dōtonbori has a queue covers those streets, and the Namba neighborhood page maps them.
Namba is also the most practical base for a long stay with a case or two. The Nankai terminal and the subway are in the same district, so arrival day involves a short transfer, and the Kintetsu line to Nara also leaves from Namba.

A fair pick if the eating streets and the Nara line are why you came.

2. Umeda
Umeda is the city's rail hub and it feels like one: office towers, department stores and an underground network of passages that takes a day to learn. It is the best base if Kyoto, Kobe or Himeji are on your list, because JR services leave from Osaka Station and Hankyu trains to Kyoto and Kobe leave from Osaka-umeda nearby. You walk to the platform instead of riding a subway first with your bags.
Evenings are calmer than in Namba. Nakazakicho, a short distance east, has small cafés and bars in older low buildings and is a good counterweight to the towers. Tenma, on the JR loop line, has the izakaya alleys that many visitors prefer to the restaurant floors of the station buildings. The Umeda neighborhood page lists the exits worth learning first.
The trade-off is the airport. KIX's official access page lists about 65 minutes from the airport to Osaka Station on the JR Kansai Airport Rapid, and about 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka on the Haruka, with Umeda a short subway ride south on the Midōsuji line. Limousine buses also serve Osaka Station according to the airport's bus page; check the current timetable. Room rates also tend to run higher on weekdays, when business travel fills the chain hotels around the station.

3. Shinsaibashi
Shinsaibashi sits between Namba and Honmachi and is built around a covered shopping arcade. Choose it for a hotel within walking distance of Dōtonbori that is a notch quieter than Namba itself, and for rain days, when the arcade keeps you dry for much of the way toward the canal. Shopping streets empty out when the shutters come down, so side streets near the arcade are quiet late in the evening.
Midōsuji, the wide avenue on the west side of the arcade, is lined with flagship stores and ginkgo trees. West of it, Amerikamura and Minami-Horie have secondhand clothing shops and coffee bars. Hotels here are mostly mid-range and newer, and rooms are often a little larger than the Namba average, though you should check the listed size on the booking page.
For getting around, the Midōsuji line takes you north to Umeda and south to Namba and Tennoji. The airport is the weak point: you ride one stop to Namba, or walk to Nankai Namba, before you board the airport train.

4. Tennoji
Tennoji is the usual answer for a lower room rate without a long commute. The JR Haruka and the Kansai Airport Rapid both stop here. KIX's official access page lists about 30 minutes on the Haruka and about 45 on the Rapid, which makes it the quickest area to the airport by JR. The Midōsuji line gets you to Namba and Umeda without a change. Kintetsu trains from Osaka-Abenobashi, next to the station area, head toward Nara Prefecture and the south.
The area has more open space than Minami. Tennoji Park and the zoo are next to the station, Shitennō-ji temple is a walk north, and the observatory at the top of Abeno Harukas looks across the city. Shinsekai, with its kushikatsu counters under Tsūtenkaku tower, is a short walk west across the park.
Evenings are about department store food floors and the restaurants in the station buildings, and the streets empty earlier than in Namba. Book near the station and Abeno, and read recent reviews carefully before choosing a hotel southwest of Shinsekai toward Shin-Imamiya, where the lowest rates are and the streets are quieter and rougher late at night.

5. Nakazakicho
Nakazakicho is a few blocks of older wooden houses and narrow lanes east of Umeda, now filled with cafés, vintage shops and small galleries. It is a short walk from Osaka Station and close to the Tanimachi subway line. Mornings are quiet and residential, with day-trip trains on the JR network not far away.
Hotels are few. Expect guesthouses, a handful of small hotels and rental apartments rather than towers, so book further ahead than you would in Namba. Many small places have stairs, shared bathrooms or limited front desk hours, so read the listing for check-in times and facilities, especially if you arrive late.
Many cafés in districts like this close early in the evening. For dinner, plan on walking to Tenma, where the izakaya alleys around JR Temma Station and the long Tenjinbashisuji arcade stay lively later.

6. Shin-Osaka
Shin-Osaka is the shinkansen station, north of Umeda across the Yodo River. The blocks around it are business hotels, convenience stores and offices. Stay here for a first-train shinkansen to Tokyo or Hiroshima, or for a single night between two long train days, and for little else.
It is well connected. KIX's official page lists about 50 minutes from the airport to Shin-Osaka on the Haruka, and the airport also explains the route by Nankai and the Midōsuji line, or by limousine bus to Umeda and the same subway line. The Midōsuji line runs between Shin-Osaka and Umeda, so dinner in the larger district is one subway ride away.
Evenings are the problem. Outside the restaurant floors of the station itself, business districts have fewer places open late, and the streets are empty after the office crowd goes home.

Which area for which trip
Match the area to the trip rather than to a list of sights. Every area above is on or near the Midōsuji line, so the choice is about evenings, airports and day trips.
First trip, three or four nights, food first: Namba, on the calm side of the canal.
Kyoto, Kobe and Himeji day trips: Umeda, so the JR and Hankyu platforms are a short walk away.
Arriving or leaving by JR from KIX: Tennoji, for the Haruka stop, or Umeda if the city center matters more.
Lowest nightly rate near a good line: Tennoji, with careful street choice, or Shin-Osaka for one night.
Quiet mornings, cafés, a smaller guesthouse: Nakazakicho, with a late-evening plan for dinner.
Shopping and rain-proof walking: Shinsaibashi, close to the arcade and one stop from Namba.
Early shinkansen: Shin-Osaka, for one night only.
Whichever you choose, stay near a station on a line you will use every day. A quiet street far from the station sounds good on a booking page and costs time every morning, more when it rains.
Mistakes to avoid
Booking for the photo instead of the route is the most common mistake. A hotel on the canal looks lively and can mean broken sleep on a weekend. Check where the entrance and the rooms face, and read recent reviews for noise in the months you travel.
The second mistake is ignoring the airport on the first and last night. Read the rail option to your station on the airport's own access page, and check that the last train suits your flight before you commit to a cheaper room in a less convenient area. Late arrivals favor a hotel on the Nankai or JR route you will actually use.
The third is comparing the wrong total. Compare the nightly rate after tax and fees, and compare it per person if the tax is charged that way. A cheaper listing that adds fees at the desk can cost more than a mid-priced room with the tax shown in the total.
The fourth is changing hotels inside the city. Osaka is small enough that one base covers almost everything, and a move costs half a day. The exception is a trip that ends with an early flight or shinkansen, where a last night in Tennoji or Shin-Osaka can shorten the morning.
From the airport
Kansai Airport's own access page lists the main options and times. By Nankai, Namba takes about 34 minutes on the Rapi:t α, about 39 on the Rapi:t β and about 43 on the Airport Express. By JR, Tennoji takes about 30 minutes on the Haruka limited express and about 45 on the Kansai Airport Rapid Service. The Haruka reaches Shin-Osaka in about 50 minutes, and the Rapid takes about 65 minutes to Osaka Station. The airport lists Kyoto at about 75 minutes on the Haruka. These are the airport's estimates, so check the operators' timetables for your arrival time.
Limousine buses serve Osaka Station and Namba from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, according to the airport's bus page. They are an easy choice with heavy bags or small children, because you skip station stairs. If you land late at night, check the last departures of the train or bus you plan to use before you book a hotel, and keep a backup such as a taxi in mind.
Itami (ITM) handles domestic flights and is on the north side of the city. Check its own site for the monorail and bus connections to Umeda and Namba. An ICOCA card, or a Suica or PASMO card, works on most of the trains above. Seat reservations on limited express trains such as the Rapi:t and Haruka are ticketed separately, so check the operator's page for the fare and the seat type.
Accommodation tax
Osaka charges an accommodation tax on hotel stays. It is set per person, per night, and the amount rises with the room rate. It is small next to the room price, but it is not always in the price you see. Some booking sites include it in the total, and many hotels collect it at check-in.
When you compare areas, compare the total per night after tax, and remember that the tax counts people, not rooms, so a double for two pays it twice. If you split your trip with another city, remember that other cities may set their own tax, so check each city's official site.
Preguntas frecuentes
Is Namba or Umeda better for a first trip?
Namba, unless day trips dominate the plan. Food, nightlife and the Nankai airport line are all in the south, so most first evenings end there. If Kyoto, Kobe and Himeji are all on the list, Umeda saves you a subway transfer on the mornings you leave by JR.
Should I stay in Kyoto instead?
If Kyoto is the main reason for the trip, yes: you avoid the commute and can start early at the temples. If you want several cities, Osaka works as a base because JR trains leave from Osaka Station and Hankyu trains leave from Umeda for Kyoto. Check the current timetable for your day.
How many nights do I need in Osaka?
Two or three nights cover the city itself, split between the south (Minami) and the north (Kita, with the castle). Add a night for every day trip you do not want to rush. One Osaka hotel for a longer stay avoids repacking, which is the main argument for a single base.
Is Shin-Osaka a good area to stay?
Only for an early or late shinkansen. The area around the station is offices and business hotels, so evenings are thin. For anything else, Umeda is a short ride away on the Midōsuji subway line and has far more to do after dark.
Is Tennoji safe at night?
The station, Abeno and the streets around Tennoji Park are busy and lit late. The streets toward Shin-Imamiya, southwest of Shinsekai, are quieter and rougher after dark, so many visitors prefer a hotel closer to Tennoji Station or Abeno. Use normal city judgment and read recent guest reviews for the exact street.
Is the accommodation tax included in the price?
Sometimes. Some booking sites add it to the total and many hotels collect it at the desk. It is charged per person, per night, on rooms at or above ¥5,000 per person per night, so a double pays it twice. See the rule box below for the bands.
