Trains from steam to Shinkansen

Kyoto Railway Museum

Kyoto Railway Museum opened in 2016 and is devoted to Japan’s railway history and technology. Its collection includes dozens of retired trains, from steam locomotives to electric trains and Shinkansen cars. The full-size vehicles give you a close look at how the country’s railways have changed over time.

The exhibits go beyond the trains themselves. Displays cover railway uniforms and tools, along with parts and equipment used in train operations. Some sections explain how railway systems work through practical demonstrations, and interactive exhibits let you try activities such as operating a train simulator. These hands-on displays make the museum a useful stop for families, as well as for visitors with a particular interest in railways.

A circular steam-locomotive garage is one of the museum’s distinctive sights. It brings several historic engines together in a working railway setting, and you can see the turntable in operation. The collection and displays also include the first-generation Shinkansen.

For an additional fee, you can take a ride of about one kilometre on a steam-hauled train. The trip takes around 10 minutes. If you want to include it, check the available departure times and arrange a ticket before planning the rest of your visit. Some visitors report that a later departure can coincide with activity at the turntable, but the timing of demonstrations may depend on the day.

A large indoor diorama brings miniature trains into motion across a detailed landscape. Operators control the trains, so it is worth checking the show timing when you arrive and fitting it around the rest of your visit. Children can also try other interactive displays, including train-driving experiences; these are popular, so check booking arrangements in advance.

The third-floor Sky Terrace looks out over railway tracks, where you can watch trains pass through Kyoto. The museum’s indoor exhibits make it a possible choice for a rainy day, though some displays and outdoor areas are outside. Allow several hours if you want time for the trains, hands-on activities, the diorama and a steam train ride.
