Stay near Kanazawa Station for trains and day trips, in Korinbo for Kenroku-en and dinner, in Omicho if the market is the point, and in Higashi Chaya for a machiya inn. Everything is a short bus ride apart. Two nights is enough; book early for cherry blossom, Golden Week and autumn weekends.

Stay in Korinbo for a first visit to Kanazawa, near the station if you have an early train or day trips, and in Higashi Chaya if you want a machiya inn and quiet lanes. This guide belongs to the Kanazawa travel guide and covers four bases a short bus ride from each other, on a trip across Japan.
Kanazawa is compact. The buses that loop past the sights make every area easy to reach, so the choice is about your mornings and evenings rather than about distance. Two nights is the usual stay, and it is easy to combine with Kyoto, Tokyo or a trip into the mountains.
How to choose a base in Kanazawa
The city centers on Kanazawa Station, with the sights spread to the south and east. Buses link the station with Korinbo, Omicho and Higashi Chaya, and the Kanazawa Loop Bus is the most convenient for visitors: the right-hand route leaves from the station's east exit and passes Higashi Chaya, Kenroku-en and Kanazawa Castle, and the 21st Century Museum area. Check live bus times for your dates rather than counting on a fixed ride time.
Weigh three things. First, your trains: the Hokuriku shinkansen from Tokyo takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, and a 7am departure is easier from the station area. Second, your evenings: Korinbo has the dinner streets, while Higashi Chaya and Omicho tend to be quieter after dark. Third, the season. Rooms are likely to be scarce in cherry blossom season, Golden Week, autumn weekends and when the snow crab season opens in early November. Ishikawa's crab fishing season opens on 6 November, and Kanazawa's tourism site says the crabs reach Omicho Market and other fish shops from 7 November.
Price bands are rough guides to a night for a double room: $ is a plain business hotel, $$ a newer business or mid-range hotel, $$$ an upscale hotel or ryokan. Rates move with the season, so compare live prices for your dates. Machiya, the traditional wooden townhouses, are often sold as whole houses or small rooms, so rates vary a lot. Compare the total price after tax.
1. Kanazawa Station
Kanazawa Station has a large wooden gate resembling a torii, known as the Tsuzumi Gate, and a glass dome over the east exit plaza that shelters travelers from rain and snow. Around it are business hotels, malls and food halls. If you arrive by shinkansen and leave early the next day, this is the easiest base. The right-hand Loop Bus route and the highway buses on the Shirakawa-go line start here as well.
The area is not the historic side of the city. After the shops close, the streets are quiet, and you take a bus into the center for dinner. In exchange you get short walks in the rain, luggage lockers and an easy start for a morning at Kenroku-en. If you plan the Takayama and Shirakawa-go bus trip, this is where you want to sleep the night before.
Choose from business hotels, chain hotels and a few capsule options. The airport limousine bus from Komatsu Airport takes about 40 minutes to the station, according to the Kanazawa tourism site, which makes this the simplest base for late arrivals by air.

2. Korinbo
Korinbo is the commercial heart of Kanazawa, and the best base for a first visit. Kenroku-en and the castle are close, the 21st Century Museum is nearby, and the dinner streets of Katamachi are right next door. The garden opens at 7am from 1 March to 15 October and at 8am from 16 October to the end of February. The prefecture also lets visitors enter free before those hours (4am from April to August, 5am in March, September and October, and 6am from November to February), though some facilities are not ready then, so a Korinbo hotel suits an early walk.
The evenings are livelier than at the station. You can find sushi counters, izakaya and small bars within a short walk, and Kanazawa's specialties, such as seafood, are easy to try. It is not wild after midnight, and the streets calm down fast once you leave the main road.
Hotels are mainly mid-range business hotels and a few upscale ones, with rates that are likely to rise on blossom and autumn weekends. It is a bus ride to the station, so it works for a two-night stay in the middle of a trip. For the next leg, see where to stay in Kyoto.

3. Omicho
Omicho Market, in the Musashigatsuji area, is described by its own website as having served as the kitchen of Kanazawa residents for about 300 years, with seafood counters, produce stalls and small restaurants. Individual shops set their own hours and the market posts its monthly closing days, so check them before you plan a market breakfast or lunch rather than counting on dinner.
Around the market are business hotels and a few guesthouses. It is the practical choice for food lovers and early risers, especially in November, when the crab season begins. The streets are likely to be calmer in the evening, with fewer places to eat late than in Korinbo, which is a short bus or walk away.
Omicho also sits between the station and the old districts, so it works as a compromise between the shinkansen and the garden. Compare live rates with Korinbo for your dates before you decide whether it saves money.

4. Higashi Chaya
Higashi Chaya is the best-known teahouse district: wooden buildings with latticed fronts on a few lanes east of the river. During the day it is busy with visitors. Sleeping here gives you the streets early and late, and machiya guesthouses and small inns offer tatami rooms in old houses.
The district is small, and dinner options are limited compared with Korinbo. Nagamachi, the old samurai quarter, and the Kanazawa Castle are a short bus ride away. Expect narrow stairs and shared facilities in some machiya, and ask about luggage help before you arrive by bus from the station.
This is the choice for couples and slow travelers who care about atmosphere more than convenience. It also suits a one-night splurge at the end of a trip, when you have time to walk the lanes at dusk and again the next morning.

Getting to Kanazawa and around
From Tokyo, the Hokuriku shinkansen takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, according to the Kanazawa tourism site. From Kyoto and Osaka, JR West's Hokuriku pages describe changing between the Thunderbird limited express and the shinkansen at Tsuruga. Komatsu Airport is about 40 minutes from the station by limousine bus. Compare single tickets with a rail pass for the Tokyo to Kanazawa leg, and price your route first with the JR Pass guide before you buy.
In the city, buses do most of the work. The Kanazawa Loop Bus links the station, Kenroku-en, the castle and Higashi Chaya. A single Loop Bus ride is ¥220 for adults and the one-day free-ride pass is ¥800, so the pass pays from the fourth ride. The passes are not sold on board, so buy one in advance at a ticket window or your hotel, and note that national IC cards also work on the Loop Bus. Keep some cash as a backup for market stalls and small inns. An eSIM helps with bus times and maps; see the best eSIM for Japan roundup.
For onward trips, Shirakawa-go and Takayama run by highway bus, and Nagano and Matsumoto are reached by rail. The Japan in 10 days route puts Kanazawa between Tokyo and Kyoto.
Accommodation tax and when to book
Kanazawa charges a small accommodation tax per person, per night, and the amount rises with the room rate. Rooms under ¥5,000 per person per night are exempt. Guests pay it to the hotel, and it is not always included in the price on a booking site.
When you compare areas, compare totals after tax, and remember that it counts people, not rooms. Book early for cherry blossom season, Golden Week and autumn weekends, and for the start of the crab season in November. Outside those windows you can book closer to travel. Choose a room with free cancellation until a few days before arrival.
Two nights is enough. Spend the first day on the garden, the castle and the museum, the second on the market and the teahouse streets, then move on.
Rain, mistakes and who should choose what
Kanazawa is a good city for a wet day, because the Loop Bus runs on set routes and several sights are indoors. If rain is forecast, a base near the station keeps your walk to the shinkansen under cover, and Korinbo keeps the museum and dinner within a short trip. In snow, leave extra time for buses and trains, and avoid a tight connection on the day you fly home.
Three mistakes cost travelers the most. The first is comparing prices before tax: the accommodation tax is charged per person, so a two-person room for two nights can add up, and it may not be on the booking site total. The second is booking Higashi Chaya for a short stay with heavy suitcases; a machiya suits one slow night, not a base for a week of day trips. The third is staying at the station and then planning every dinner in Korinbo, which turns an easy bus ride into a daily chore.
If you want one answer: first-time visitors with two nights should choose Korinbo, travelers on a tight rail schedule should choose the station, food-focused travelers who plan to be at the market early should choose Omicho, and couples who want atmosphere over convenience should choose one night in Higashi Chaya. Anyone who needs lifts, step-free access or late dinners should skip the machiya and pick a conventional hotel.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is the best area to stay in Kanazawa?
Korinbo for a first visit, because Kenroku-en, the castle and dinner streets are close. Choose the station area if you have an early train or day trips, and Higashi Chaya for a machiya inn and quieter streets.
Is Kanazawa Station a good place to stay?
Yes, for short stays and day trips. The shinkansen arrives there, the right-hand Loop Bus route starts at the station's east exit, and Nohi Bus lists Kanazawa Station on its Shirakawa-go line. The evenings are quieter than Korinbo, so take a bus into the center for dinner.
How many nights do you need in Kanazawa?
Two nights cover Kenroku-en, the castle, Omicho Market and the two teahouse districts. Add a night if you plan a day trip to Shirakawa-go or want a slow morning in the garden.
Should I stay in Kanazawa or Kyoto?
They do different jobs. Kyoto has the temples and the crowds; Kanazawa has gardens, crafts and seafood at a slower pace. Most routes use both: two nights here, then a limited express via Tsuruga to Kyoto.
Is it worth staying in a machiya in Higashi Chaya?
Yes, for one night, if you like old wooden houses and quiet lanes. Expect steep stairs, thin walls and early check-in cut-offs. Pick a conventional hotel if you have heavy bags or need a lift.
