On Piazza dei Signori in Verona, the Loggia del Consiglio is a Renaissance building once used for meetings of the city council. Its marble columns, arched openings and classical decoration give the square much of its character. Look for the statues of Roman writers and poets from Verona above the roofline, then take in the building’s details from the piazza. It is usually admired from outside, but special events or exhibitions can sometimes open parts of the building to visitors.

Verona’s municipality began searching for a suitable council site in 1451. In 1476, it decided to build a loggia with marble columns on Piazza dei Signori, replacing an older, poorly maintained palace. The new building’s façade was set back to align more closely with the surrounding structures and give the square a more balanced form.

The Loggia del Consiglio was built as a meeting place for the city council. Its construction continued over time, and Verona citizens took part in the project. The building is attributed to the Verona architect Fra Giocondo.

The loggia’s central arched opening is framed by smaller arches and Corinthian columns. Medallions and classically inspired friezes decorate the façade. Above it, carved figures include Roman writers and poets associated with Verona, among them Catullus.

The building also has sculptural reliefs and painted decoration. Two bronze high reliefs by Gerolamo Campagna depict the Angel of the Annunciation and the Virgin Annunciate. Parts of the interior have wooden walls and ceilings, but the building is not normally open to visitors. Special events or exhibitions may provide access.
