Church of St Mary of the Stairs stands on the stepped route between Ragusa Superiore and Ragusa Ibla. Its medieval origins and later Baroque rebuilding come together in a church known for three surviving Sicilian Gothic portals. The Church of St Mary of the Stairs sits along the stairway linking Ragusa Superiore with Ragusa Ibla. Its position makes the approach part of the visit: the steps open onto views of Ibla and the surrounding area, with the church and nearby homes framing the outlook.

The church’s origins date to the first half of the 13th century. Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Santa Maria di Roccadia in Lentini built it in a Gothic style. In the second half of the 18th century, as the population grew, the building was enlarged and substantially rebuilt in Baroque style.

The building brings together medieval and Baroque elements. Three Sicilian Gothic portals are among its most notable details; they survived the 1693 earthquake. Inside the church, the Candelora Chapel is identified with Sicilian Gothic style.

The church is often closed to casual visitors, so check access before making the climb. Even when the doors are shut, the terrace and stairs remain a place to pause and look across Ragusa Ibla. Late afternoon and dusk bring the best light for photographs, with the sun setting behind you.
