Basilica of St. Apollinaris in Classe

The Basilica of St.

The Basilica of St. Apollinaris in Classe is a 6th century church just outside Ravenna, set among fields and pine trees. It is dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, the first bishop of Ravenna and Classe. Its plain design contrasts with a richly decorated interior, where Byzantine mosaics, marble columns and sarcophagi from different centuries stand. Go for the mosaics, the glowing apse with its symbolic imagery and the quiet setting, and give yourself time to look at the columns and the sarcophagi.

From Classe to the Western Empire

Ravenna was a central city in western civilisation during the 5th and 6th centuries. It served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire from 402 until the empire fell in 476. Later it became a centre of Ostrogoth rule under King Theodoric, and then part of the Byzantine Empire.

Classe was a small harbour town, and the basilica stands there today. It is dedicated to Saint Apollinaris, the first bishop of Ravenna and Classe, and it dates from the 6th century, when the church was an important example of early Christian building.

Inside the basilica

The church contrasts plain architecture with lavish decoration. The walls and the overall design are simple, while the interior is rich in Byzantine mosaics that draw the eye toward the apse. The apse is decorated with symbolic imagery, and it is the part of the church most visitors remember.

Ancient objects sit among the mosaics. Proconnesian marble columns and sarcophagi from different centuries are on display, so you can see several periods of the building's history in one room. Allow time to look at each column and sarcophagus instead of moving straight to the apse.

Later additions to the building include Romanesque, Baroque and Neoclassical elements, so the church shows how it changed over the centuries rather than keeping one style.

Getting there and visiting

The basilica lies slightly outside Ravenna. You can reach it by public transport or by car, and the parking area is free. The car park and the entrance are wheelchair accessible, and so is the restroom.

Tickets can be bought in advance, and the site recommends doing so. Weekday visits and early mornings tend to be quieter, which gives you more space to look at the mosaics.

If you want more to see in the area, the National Museum of Ravenna is nearby and can be visited in the same trip.
