Santuario di San Bernardino alle Ossa is a Catholic church on Piazza Santo Stefano in Milan, a short walk from the Duomo. Its small side chapel is an ossuary, with human skulls and bones arranged across the walls in patterns. Look up to see the contrast between the bone-covered walls and the chapel’s painted ceiling, then pause at the altar and the niche with a statue of the sorrowful Madonna. The quiet, compact space makes this a brief visit with a reflective focus on death and faith.

How the ossuary began

The church stands beside the site of a former cemetery and hospital. When the cemetery ran short of room, a chamber was built in 1210 to store human remains. Bones from the cemetery and nearby hospitals were placed in the ossuary, which became the church’s defining feature.

The church was later dedicated to Saint Bernardino of Siena. The original building was destroyed by a fire in 1712 and rebuilt. The current design dates to 1776.

Inside the bone chapel

The ossuary is a small, square side chapel. Its walls are covered with skulls and other bones arranged in patterns, rather than placed randomly. The remains frame parts of the chapel’s architecture, including its walls and columns.

Look up as well as around: frescoes on the ceiling provide a striking contrast with the bone decoration. The chapel also has an altar and a niche with a statue of the sorrowful Madonna kneeling beside the deceased Jesus.

Finding the chapel

Enter San Bernardino alle Ossa from Piazza Santo Stefano. From the church entrance, take the narrow corridor on the right to reach the ossuary. The chapel is small, so the visit is usually brief.

The church is close to the Duomo, making it easy to add to a walk through central Milan. For a calmer visit, choose a weekday. Sunday access to the ossuary can be uncertain, so check ahead if it is the main reason for your stop.

A respectful visit

The chapel is part of a functioning sacred place, as well as a historic site. Keep your voice low and treat the human remains with respect. Photography without flash is permitted; avoid disturbing worshippers or other people visiting the church.
