Piazza Gae Aulenti opened in 2012 as the centerpiece of Milan’s Porta Nuova redevelopment. It takes its name from Gae Aulenti, an Italian architect and designer. The American firm Pelli Clarke & Partners, led by César Pelli, designed the square.

The plaza sits on a raised podium and has a circular plan. Its position among newer office and residential buildings gives it a different architectural character from Milan’s older districts. The surrounding development includes buildings with solar panels and pocket fabric elements designed for environmental efficiency.

Three synchronized fountains sit in the square. Their effects combine water, light and music, giving the central space a changing focus as you move around it.

Look up to see the UniCredit Tower, which reaches 231 metres and is Italy’s tallest building. Bosco Verticale and Torre Diamante are also part of the contemporary skyline around the plaza. Green spaces, shops and eateries provide places to pause, and nearby Corso Como makes it easy to extend your visit into the surrounding district.
