A museum for the cathedral’s history

The Museo del Duomo di Milano is in the Palazzo Reale, opposite Milan Cathedral. Its collection brings together artworks and objects connected to the Duomo, including pieces removed from the building over time for conservation or restoration. Sculptures, tapestries, paintings, graphic works and models show how the cathedral was designed, built and altered across the centuries.

The museum opened in 1953. The idea of preserving the cathedral’s history had emerged decades earlier, and the collection grew as more objects needed suitable care and display space. Today, the exhibits give visitors a closer look at the art and construction behind one of Milan’s defining buildings.

The displays include original statues, stained-glass windows, marble work and tapestries. Seeing these pieces at close range makes it easier to notice their detail than it is from the cathedral floor. Terracotta sketches, paintings and other design material also help explain how parts of the Duomo took shape.

A large wooden model gives a view of the cathedral as a complete structure. Together, the models and individual works connect the finished building with the objects and processes behind its construction. The exhibits are arranged to guide visitors through the Duomo’s evolution, rather than presenting the collection as unrelated works of art.

Planning your visit

The museum is at Piazza del Duomo 12, inside the Palazzo Reale. It works well as a companion to a cathedral visit, either beforehand for context or afterwards to look more closely at objects associated with the building. A full Duomo complex ticket includes the museum, though check the terms of your own ticket before planning visits across separate days.

For a quieter visit, choose an early time or a weekday. The Duomo app can support your visit. Keep your voice low, and switch off the camera flash when taking photographs. If you plan to shop, check your selection before paying, since exchanges or refunds may not be accepted.
