Fondazione Prada is a contemporary art and culture centre at Largo Isarco in southern Milan, inside a former early-20th-century distillery. Rem Koolhaas and OMA combined restored industrial buildings with newer spaces, including the Podium, Cinema and Tower. The architecture is part of the visit: look for the gold-covered Haunted House and the contrasting concrete tower, then explore the changing exhibitions and permanent works. The complex is large, so allow time to move between buildings. Bar Luce, designed by filmmaker Wes Anderson, and Ristorante Torre provide places to eat on site.

A former distillery becomes an art centre

Fondazione Prada’s permanent Milan venue opened in 2015 at Largo Isarco, in the southern part of the city. The site was once an early-20th-century distillery. OMA, the architecture studio led by Rem Koolhaas, adapted the existing complex and added new buildings, keeping the old and new structures distinct rather than blending them into one design.

The foundation began in 1993 as a platform for contemporary art and culture. Its programme extends beyond exhibitions to include projects connected with cinema, architecture and other fields. At the Milan site, exhibition spaces sit alongside a cinema, bar and restaurant.

Buildings to look for

The complex includes restored industrial buildings and three purpose-built structures: the Podium, the Cinema and the Tower. Their different forms give the site its varied layout. The gold-covered Haunted House is one of the most recognisable buildings; it contains works by Louise Bourgeois and Robert Gober. The Tower provides space for exhibitions, while the Podium is used for shows in a large, open setting.

The buildings themselves are a reason to visit, even for guests who want to spend less time with contemporary art. A glass elevator is noted for panoramic views across Milan. Because the grounds contain several buildings and exhibition spaces, use the map available by QR code at the front desk to help plan your route.

Exhibitions and planning your route

Fondazione Prada presents permanent works as well as temporary exhibitions by Italian and international artists. The programme changes, so the works on view depend on when you visit. Past and noted works include Carsten Höller’s upside-down mushroom room and Jeff Koons’ Tulips. English translations are available with exhibition information.

Allow a substantial part of your day if you want to see several exhibitions and explore the architecture. Directions between spaces can be hard to follow, so check the map and ask staff when an entrance is unclear. Some exhibition areas involve stairs, and accessibility differs across the complex.

Bar Luce and food on site

Bar Luce was designed by filmmaker Wes Anderson with the look of a Milanese café from the 1950s and 1960s. Its interiors include pastel-coloured furnishings and patterned details. It is a place to pause for a drink or a café stop during a visit to the exhibitions.

Ristorante Torre is another dining option within the foundation. The venue has a restaurant as well as a bar, so you can plan a meal on site rather than leave the complex between exhibitions.
