Branca Tower is a 108.6-metre iron observation tower in Parco Sempione, near Castello Sforzesco. Designed by Gio Ponti and opened in 1933, it takes you up by elevator for a 360-degree view across Milan. Look for the Duomo, Castello Sforzesco and Arena Civica; on clear days, the view reaches the Alps, Apennines and Po Valley. The visit is brief, with about 5 to 10 minutes at the top, so it works well as a quick stop while exploring the park.

A tower in Parco Sempione

Branca Tower

Branca Tower stands in Parco Sempione, close to Castello Sforzesco. It is an iron observation tower, not a medieval fortification. Gio Ponti designed it, and it opened in 1933. The structure was built in three months and rises 108.6 metres above the park.

The tower was later restored and reopened to visitors in 2002. Its location makes it easy to combine a ride to the top with time in the park or a visit to the castle. Parco Sempione has paths, lawns, fountains and sculptures, so the tower can fit into a longer walk as well as a short stop.

What you can see from the top

The observation platform gives views in all directions across Milan. Look for the Duomo, Castello Sforzesco and Arena Civica below. On clear days, the panorama extends beyond the city towards the Alps and Apennines, with part of the Po Valley also visible.

The elevator ride takes about a minute. The time at the top is limited, usually around 5 to 10 minutes, and the lift carries only a small group at a time. Have your camera ready before you reach the platform so you can make the most of the short visit.

The tower and the Madonnina

Branca Tower’s height has a curious connection to Milan Cathedral. At 108.6 metres, it is around 10 centimetres taller than the Duomo’s main spire, topped by the gold statue of the Madonnina, which reaches 108.5 metres.

An unwritten Milanese custom holds that human-made buildings should not rise above the Madonnina, seen as the city’s protector. Later, taller buildings such as the Pirelli Tower followed the custom by placing a replica of the statue at the top. Branca Tower’s near-match in height makes it part of that local architectural conversation.
