Porta San Niccolò is a medieval gate in Piazza Giuseppe Poggi, on the south bank of the Arno in Florence’s Oltrarno district. Built in 1324 as part of the city’s defensive walls, it is one of the best-preserved gates and the only surviving tower to retain its original height. In summer, guided visits let you climb 160 steps to the top for views over the river, its bridges and Florence’s historic centre. Even when the tower is closed, you can see its stone architecture from the piazza.

Porta San Niccolò was built in 1324 as part of the southern section of Florence’s defensive walls. It once marked an entrance to the city. The tower was designed as part of the circuit of walls associated with Arnolfo di Cambio.

Much of Florence’s medieval wall system was demolished during 19th-century urban renewal. Porta San Niccolò survived, and its tower still stands at its original height. It is now separated from the walls that once connected it to the city’s defences, in Piazza Giuseppe Poggi, in Oltrarno.

In the summer visiting season, guided tours take visitors up the tower’s internal staircase. There are 160 steps to the top. The view looks across the Arno and its bridges towards central Florence; from the tower, you can also see in the direction of Piazzale Michelangelo.

Visits run from June 24 to September 30, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Tours are offered in English and Italian, with groups limited to 15. Access has been closed at times, so check current arrangements before planning your visit around the climb.
