Between Florence Cathedral and Piazza della Signoria, Orsanmichele brings a former grain market, church and sculpture museum together in one Gothic building. Inside, look for Orcagna’s marble tabernacle around the Madonna image and the church’s decorated ceilings. The upper museum holds original statues made for the exterior niches by artists including Donatello, Ghiberti and Verrocchio; from the upper floors, you can also see Florence’s historic centre and the cathedral dome. Allow time for the stairs: there is no elevator to the upper areas.

From grain market to church

Orsanmichele stands on Via dell’Arte della Lana, between Florence Cathedral and Piazza della Signoria. Its name comes from “Orto di San Michele”, referring to the former garden and oratory associated with the site. The building later served as a grain market, with storage above the trading floor. The arrangement linked everyday commerce with the city’s need to store grain for difficult years.

In the 14th century, the open market loggia was enclosed and turned into a church. A Madonna image inside became the focus of reported miracles, drawing people to pray there. The building’s unusual form still hints at its earlier civic purpose: it is a tall, square structure rather than a church with a familiar long layout.

The church occupies the ground floor. Its central focus is the Madonna image, framed by Orcagna’s elaborate marble tabernacle. Take time to look beyond the main altar: the building’s ceilings and architectural details reward a slower look, including its brick arches.

Orsanmichele was closely connected to Florence’s trade and craft guilds. These groups supported the church and commissioned statues of their patron saints for niches on the exterior. The sculpture programme links the building’s religious role to the guilds that shaped Florentine civic life.

Original statues and views upstairs

The exterior niches contain copies of the statues; the originals are kept in the upper museum. The collection includes works associated with Donatello, Ghiberti and Verrocchio. Seeing the sculptures indoors lets you examine them at close range, while the façade shows how they were arranged around the building.

The upper floors also provide views over Florence’s historic centre and toward the cathedral dome. Reaching the upper areas involves stairs, and there is no elevator. If the museum or viewing area is a priority, check current access details before your visit: the available information about museum access is inconsistent.
