At Beit Ha'ir on Bialik Square, the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum traces the city’s municipal history through permanent displays and interactive exhibits. The building served as Tel Aviv’s first town hall and was the home of its first mayor, Meir Dizengoff. Explore the timeline from the arrival of the city’s first 66 families in 1909, then look at displays on local culture and architecture. Holiday events and performances add another reason to visit this cultural stop in the White City area.

The Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum is housed in Beit Ha'ir, the historic town hall on Bialik Square. The building was originally intended to be a hotel and is also known as the former home of Meir Dizengoff, Tel Aviv’s first mayor. Its name means “the town’s home.” It later served as Tel Aviv City Hall, before municipal offices moved to Ibn Gabirol Street.

Beit Ha'ir sits within the Bialik Complex, a group of buildings associated with Hebrew and Israeli culture. The square and surrounding buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for Tel Aviv’s White City. The area is known for its modern international architecture, including Bauhaus influences and local motifs. The museum building has been restored and preserved under architect Meira Kowalsky’s planning.

Tracing the city’s early years

The museum’s permanent displays tell the story of Tel Aviv-Yafo, from its beginnings through later urban and cultural development. An interactive timeline follows the arrival of the first 66 families on 11 April 1909 and the decades that followed. It gives visitors a way to connect the city’s early growth with its changing civic life.

Displays also cover the city’s culture and architecture. Take time with the interactive material rather than treating the museum as a quick stop: it provides context for the historic buildings around Bialik Square and the White City area.

Exhibitions and events

Alongside its permanent displays, Beit Ha'ir hosts changing exhibitions and serves as a venue for local and international artists, creators and intellectuals. Shows and events are held mostly during holidays, so a visit at those times may include more than the museum exhibits. The programme can add a performing arts element to a visit focused on the city’s history.

The museum is on Bialik Street, a short walk west from Allenby Street. Its location on the square offers a quieter pause from the busier street nearby. If you are visiting for a particular event, check the museum’s programme and have your ticket ready when you arrive.
