Tel Aviv Port
Lugar emblemático

Tel Aviv Port

Tel Aviv Port, also called Namal, is a former commercial harbor at the northern end of the city's beachfront.

Tel Aviv Port, also called Namal, is a former commercial harbor at the northern end of the city's beachfront. It handled cargo until the 1960s, and its old warehouses now hold shops, cafes, restaurants and clubs. The centerpiece is a wide wooden promenade over the water, where the sea breeze keeps the area pleasant even on hot days. Visitors come to walk, sit by the water, browse Israeli designer stores and visit the Friday farmers' market. Families come for the playgrounds, the sand pit and the carousel.

From harbor to leisure district

The port was built in the 1930s as the gateway for cargo arriving in Tel Aviv. It served as Israel's main freight terminal until it closed in the 1960s, when shipping moved elsewhere.

Restoration began in 2002. The old warehouses, known as hangars, were converted into shops, cafes, restaurants and clubs, and many keep the form they had as working buildings. The port is no longer used for commercial shipping, though one reminder of its past remains in the layout of the quays along the harbor.

Walking the promenade

The main feature is a wooden deck of about 14,000 square meters, shaped in gentle dips and curves that echo the city's sand dunes. It runs along the water and is open to walkers, cyclists and skaters.

A breakwater extends further out from the port, and walking along it gives a wider view of the sea. Near the playgrounds there is a fountain area, and in the center a carousel draws children. Bicycles can be rented on site, and the bike lane runs the length of the promenade.

Shops, markets and food

Inside the hangars you will find Israeli designer labels, along with clothing, sport and design stores. Some of the buildings also house the flagship shops of well-known brands.

The Friday market sets up outside Hangar 12, with about 50 growers and producers selling fruit, vegetables, wine and beer. It is one of the busier and more expensive markets in town. A permanent indoor market, Shuk HaNamal, has fruit and vegetable stands, butchers, wine and cheese shops, and a few restaurants.

Kitchen Market is a contemporary gourmet restaurant on the upper floor of the indoor market. One side looks out over the sea, and the other looks down on the marketplace.

Evenings and events

After dark the hangars become a nightlife area with bars, clubs and live music. In summer, the port is one of the places where the night often runs until dawn.

The open spaces host concerts, festivals and community events, and some of these are free to attend. Event schedules change, so check what is on before you plan an evening.
