Pura Lempuyang is a Hindu temple complex on Mount Lempuyang in eastern Bali, known for its stone gateway framing Mount Agung. The view is the draw, but the site is also part of a spiritual pilgrimage route through several sanctuaries. At the famous gate, photographers use a mirror to create the appearance of a reflection; there is no pool beneath it. You can stop for the mountain scenery or continue uphill toward Pura Lempuyang Luhur, a longer climb with quieter surroundings and broad views.

Pura Lempuyang sits on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in Karangasem, eastern Bali. It is a Hindu temple complex and part of a pilgrimage route through several sanctuaries, with Pura Lempuyang Luhur at the higher end of the climb. The journey beyond the well-known gateway takes you through temple levels and uphill paths, with mountain scenery along the way.

The site has religious importance for Balinese people. Treat the grounds as a place of worship, not only a photo stop. A sarong is required, and respectful conduct is appropriate throughout the complex.

The gateway and Mount Agung

The stone gateway is the image most associated with Pura Lempuyang. From the right angle, Mount Agung appears between its pillars. Photographers use a mirror to produce the familiar reflected image; there is no pond or lake at the gate. The mountain view is weather-dependent, so the framed sight may look different from one visit to another.

Photography can involve a numbered queue, and waits of around two to three hours have been reported. If the photo matters to you, plan for a wait rather than treating it as a quick stop. You can also skip the queue and spend your time looking around the grounds and taking in the views.

Getting uphill and choosing your visit

From the parking area, visitors take a shuttle up a steep road, then walk uphill to the temple entrance. A motorbike ride is also mentioned as an alternative to part of the climb. The route continues on foot for those heading to Pura Lempuyang Luhur, with more than 1,700 steps described along the longer pilgrimage climb.

You do not have to make the full ascent to visit the famous gate. Staying near the first platform makes for a shorter visit; continuing uphill takes more effort and leads farther from the busiest photo point. Go early for cooler conditions and sunrise light, or consider late afternoon, when some visitors have found the photo queue shorter. The complex may close to the public during Balinese festivities.
