Pura Kehen is a Hindu temple in Bangli, Bali, once the royal temple of the Bangli Kingdom.

Pura Kehen is a Hindu temple in Bangli, Bali, once the royal temple of the Bangli Kingdom. Inscriptions place the site as early as the 9th century. A steep flight of steps climbs to carved stone gateways and a series of courtyards, where you can see a large banyan tree with a kulkul tower among its branches, carved shrines and an 11-roof meru. The terraced setting and quieter atmosphere make this a rewarding stop for a closer look at Balinese temple architecture and religious art.

Pura Kehen was the royal temple of the Bangli Kingdom and is about 1.5 kilometres north of Bangli town. Inscriptions at the site refer to it as early as the 9th century. One early name associated with the temple is Hyang Api, meaning “The God of Fire.”

Its hillside position shapes the visit: the complex rises in terraces from the road, reached by a steep flight of steps. The sequence of levels leads from the entrance towards the temple courtyards, giving the approach a strong sense of ascent.

Carved stone figures guard the entrance, and Bhoma faces appear above the decorated doors. In the outer courtyard, a large banyan tree spreads around a kulkul tower. A kulkul is a hollow wooden drum used to sound warnings; here, the tower is built among the tree’s branches.

The inner courtyard contains an 11-roof meru, a tiered shrine. Other shrines hold thrones associated with the Hindu deities Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. Take time to look closely at the stonework and the different forms of the shrines as you move through the compound.

Details to notice on site

A smaller compound beneath a frangipani tree is guarded by naga figures. It contains a stone said to have glowed with fire when the temple’s location was chosen. The account is part of the site’s local tradition; the stone and its setting give you another detail to look for beyond the main stairway and courtyards.

Pura Kehen is a place of worship as well as a historic complex. Choose modest clothing and wear a sarong, and give ceremonies and worshippers space if you encounter them. For a quieter look at the architecture, visit early in the day or on a weekday. The stated entrance fee is IDR 50,000 per person; buy tickets through the official point rather than from sellers outside.
