Hooghly Imambara

Hooghly Imambara is a Shia mosque and congregation hall in Chinsurah, beside the Hooghly River.

Hooghly Imambara is a Shia mosque and congregation hall in Chinsurah, beside the Hooghly River. Its two-storey complex centres on a grand entrance and clock tower, with a prayer hall, arched corridors and a quiet courtyard to explore. Climb the tower for views over the river and surrounding town, then look for the sundial near the riverbank. The site also offers a glimpse of its religious role and Bengal’s 19th-century architecture. Treat the prayer spaces with respect, and note that some areas may be restricted.

A complex shaped by two building periods

Hooghly Imambara
Hooghly Imambara

The present Hooghly Imambara was built with funds associated with the philanthropist Haji Muhammad Mohsin. Construction began in 1841 and was completed in 1861, producing the two-storey structure seen today.

The site’s earlier history reaches back to 1717, when Persian merchant Mohammad Aga Motahar built a single-storey structure called Nazargah Hossein. His son-in-law, Mirza Saleh-ud-din, later added an extension known as Tazia Khana. After Mohsin died in 1812, disputes among trustees delayed work on the current building. The government intervened and appointed Syed Keramat Ali as trustee before construction began.

The clock tower and prayer hall

The entrance is marked by a tall clock tower, one of the most prominent parts of the complex. Its clock has two dials and three bells. The steep stairs lead to a high viewpoint over the Imambara, the town and the river, so allow time for the climb and take care on the way up.

Inside, the main prayer hall is known as the Zari Dalan. Marble flooring, Quranic calligraphy and Belgian glass lanterns give the space its distinctive character. Calligraphy also appears elsewhere in the building. Photography is prohibited in the prayer hall, and some areas may not be open to non-Muslim visitors. Follow the directions given at the site and approach the prayer spaces respectfully.

Courtyard, sundial and riverside

The courtyard and its arched corridors provide a quieter route through the complex. Look for the sundial in the rear area near the riverbank. From that side, the Hooghly and Jubilee Bridge are visible; the river’s bend is another reason to pause before leaving.

Hooghly Imambara is a Shia mosque and congregation hall, with particular importance during Muharram. Its separate entrances for men and women are part of how the site is arranged. The complex is open to people of all faiths, while its religious function remains central to the visit. Give worshippers space and observe any restrictions on access.
