Bharathi Park is a large green space on Rue Saint Gilles Street in White Town, Puducherry. Locals also call it Government Park. Its lawns, shaded paths and flower beds sit among colonial-era government buildings, and the white Aayi Mandapam monument stands at its centre. Families come for the play area and the benches, while morning walkers use the paths before the heat builds. Entry is free.
From Government Park to Bharathi Park

Locally, the park has long been known as the Government Park. The French laid it out in the 19th century, and it once served as a parade ground before it became a public green space.
Today the park is named after Subramania Bharathi, a Tamil poet. It sits in the centre of the old colonial town, a short walk from the seafront.
The Aayi Mandapam

The park's main landmark is the Aayi Mandapam, a white monument built in the 19th century under the orders of Napoleon III. It honours Aayi, a courtesan said to have built a water tank in Pondicherry.
A local story holds that during a drought, the French built a tunnel from that tank to bring water into the city. The monument stands in the middle of the lawns.
What surrounds the park
The park is framed by government buildings, including the Lieutenant Governor's residence, the Legislative Assembly, a government hospital and the Ashram Dining Room. The Cercle de Pondichéry private club is also nearby.
The Gandhi memorial and statue stand close to the park. Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Promenade Beach, Manakula Vinayagar Temple and the Puducherry Museum are all within walking distance.
What you will find inside
Paved paths run through the lawns and flower beds. Fountains, granite benches and concrete seating are spread across the grounds, and a statue of Jawaharlal Nehru stands among the trees.
There is a children's play area, and shady trees give cover on hot days. A public restroom is on site. The entrance and the parking lot are wheelchair accessible.
Planning the visit
Entry is free. A walk through the park with a rest on one of the benches usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, and families with young children often stay longer at the play area.
The colonial buildings and French-style gardens make good backdrops for photographs. The park is also used for pre-wedding and couple portraits, especially in the warmer months, when the shaded paths are most useful.
