Diwan-i-Khas

Diwan-i-Khas, the Hall of Private Audience, is inside Delhi’s Red Fort.

Diwan-i-Khas, the Hall of Private Audience, is inside Delhi’s Red Fort. This rectangular chamber, built for the Mughal emperor’s meetings with royal guests, ministers and visiting dignitaries, has arched openings supported by sturdy piers. Look closely at the marble pillars and their floral inlay, then notice how light passes through the arches and falls across the carved surfaces. The hall gives a sense of court life, and its central space once held Shah Jahan’s Peacock Throne.

A chamber for private audiences

Diwan-i-Khas means the Hall of Private Audience. Within the Red Fort, this chamber was used by the emperor for meetings with royal guests, ministers and high-ranking officials. Its role was distinct from a space for public audiences: it was here that the ruler conducted private discussions with those invited to court.

The hall is rectangular, with high arched openings resting on sturdy piers. Its arrangement and carved surfaces give the interior a formal character. Take time to look at the marble pillars, where floral inlay adds detail to the stonework.

The Peacock Throne and the arches

The Peacock Throne once stood at the centre of the hall, with Shah Jahan presiding over meetings from it. The throne is no longer part of the chamber, but its former position helps explain how the room was organised around the emperor.

Light entering through the arches changes the way the carved surfaces appear. An early visit can bring out the shifting light and shadows for photographs. Diwan-i-Khas is one stop within the larger Red Fort complex, so allow time for the other buildings as well.
