Just beyond Topolia, on the route between Chania and Elafonisi, Agia Sofia is a limestone cave with a chapel dedicated to Saint Sophia. A climb of 257 steps brings you to its cool interior, where rock formations and lit pathways lead through the cave. The small chapel gives the visit a quiet religious character, while the approach looks out over Topolia Gorge. Allow around 20 to 25 minutes to climb up and explore. Entry is free, with donations welcome.
A cave above Topolia Gorge

Agia Sofia lies just beyond the village of Topolia, on the road toward Elafonisi. The cave is described as the second largest on Crete. Its central chamber rises 20 metres and measures 70 metres across.
Lit pathways help you move through the interior and see its limestone formations, including stalactites and stalagmites. The cave has been used since ancient times, and a chapel dedicated to Saint Sophia was later established inside.
The climb and the chapel

Reaching the entrance means climbing 257 steps. There are shaded places to stop along the way, and the ascent can feel demanding if you have knee or leg problems. At the cave, the chapel adds a place of worship to the natural setting. Keep the atmosphere quiet and choose clothing appropriate for a religious site.
