The Botanical Garden of Crete sits near Fournes, at the foothills of the White Mountains. Its plant collection brings together local species and plants from other parts of the world. More than 150 kinds of fruit trees, herbs and medicinal plants used on Crete over generations grow here.

As you follow the paths, look for citrus, berries, grapes, flowers and exotic plants. Information cards identify plants along the way, giving the walk a practical focus as well as a scenic one. Traditional pottery and old farming tools add details about the island’s agricultural life.

The garden is laid out on sloping ground. The route descends before turning back uphill, with gravel, stairs and some steep stretches along the way. Benches provide places to pause, and walking sticks are available at the entrance. A shorter path covers much of the garden while avoiding its steepest sections.

At the bottom, a small lake sits among orange trees and vegetation. Peacocks, ducks and turtles can be seen around the water, and the grounds also have donkeys and deer. Donkey food is provided for visitors who want to feed them. The path forms a loop, so you return to the starting point rather than retracing the whole walk.

Food after the walk

The restaurant is near the top of the garden and serves dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Boureki, chicken and Sfakian pie are among the options mentioned, with homemade lemonade, iced coffee and local cheesecake also available. The restaurant has outdoor seating with views over the gardens.

Plan ahead if you expect to eat a full lunch: lunch dishes may not be available, and there are no places to buy drinks along the walking route. The garden also has a shop selling local products such as honey, tea, spices and cosmetics.
