Marienberg Fortress stands on a hill above the Main River, looking over Würzburg's Old Town and the vineyards that climb the slopes around it. The grounds, viewpoints and gardens are free to walk, and the path up through the vines is a large part of the visit. Renovation has closed the main castle and the fortress church, so plan around the outdoor areas and the museum sections that remain open.

From early settlement to the prince-bishops

People lived on the Marienberg hill long before the fortress was built. A Celtic fortification once stood on the site, and the hilltop has been used for defence ever since.

Frankish dukes, converted to Christianity by Irish missionary monks, laid the foundations of the fortress in the 8th century. The Marienkirche, one of the oldest churches in Germany, still stands in the castle courtyard.

From the 13th century the hilltop was the residence of Würzburg's prince-bishops. They ruled from here for centuries before moving into the Residenz in the city below. Building continued through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and a ring of massive bastions was added during the Thirty Years' War.

In 1945 bombing almost completely destroyed the fortress. Rebuilding took until 1990.

Inside the fortress

The main castle and the fortress church are closed while renovation continues. Some museum sections remain open, so check before you go.

The Mainfränkisches Museum, the Main Franconian Museum, shows the history of the region through art and artefacts. Its collection includes works by Tilman Riemenschneider, a late Gothic master woodcarver.

The Fürstenbau Museum covers the history of the fortress and the art and culture of Franconia. The Bibra Apartment and St Mary's Church are also part of the complex.

Families with children will find the Museum for Franconia engaging. Young visitors can touch or try on helmets, pointed hats and bishops' staffs, or join a treasure hunt through the museum.

Guided tours are offered in English on weekends and public holidays, and in German on other days. Confirm the schedule before you go, since it can change during renovation.

Getting up the hill

The climb is steep in places. From the Old Main Bridge, the walk takes about 30 minutes along vineyard paths, and the Tellsteige trail is one of the routes. A trail from St Burkard's Church also leads to the fortress.

Bus no. 9 climbs the hill and shortens the walk. A taxi can take you right up to the fortress.

The main entrance is wheelchair accessible, and there is a wheelchair-accessible parking lot. Parking on site is paid. The walk back down by the main forest route is quick and easy.

Gardens, promenade and views

The outer areas are free to wander, including the public gardens around the grounds. The promenade facing the Old Town and the river sits about 100 metres above the riverbank, and on a clear day it gives some of the best views of the city.

From the top gardens, the view looks east over the city. Many people find the fortress even more striking from across the Old Main Bridge, where you can see it against the hill and the vines.
