Alter Hof

Alter Hof, or Old Court, is a former Wittelsbach residence in Munich’s old town and one of the city’s oldest royal residences.

Alter Hof, or Old Court, is a former Wittelsbach residence in Munich’s old town and one of the city’s oldest royal residences. Its courtyard is the main reason to pause: look for the late Gothic, two-storey bay window and the Affenturm, or Monkey Tower, tied to a story about a monkey carrying off an infant heir. The small exhibition downstairs explains Munich’s history and can be seen in about 30 minutes. The palace was rebuilt after wartime destruction, so the visit is as much about its past as its surviving architecture.

A Wittelsbach residence

Alter Hof, or Old Court, was built as a fortified residence for the Wittelsbach family inside Munich’s walls. It became the family’s main seat and a centre of administration from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor, was among the rulers associated with the residence.

The complex later lost its position as the main seat of power when the Wittelsbach rulers moved to a newer palace. Alter Hof was damaged during the Second World War and subsequently restored. The present courtyard gives a sense of its historic setting, though much of what stands here reflects that rebuilding.

The courtyard and the Monkey Tower

Take time to look at the late Gothic details in the courtyard, especially the two-storey bay window. The Affenturm, or Monkey Tower, is associated with a local tale: a pet monkey is said to have taken an infant heir up the tower before returning the child safely. The story gives the tower its name and adds a human detail to a visit focused otherwise on the residence’s architecture and history.

The Munich Imperial Castle exhibition

A small exhibition downstairs in the information centre explores the history of Munich. Its multimedia presentation is called “Münchner Kaiserburg,” or Munich Imperial Castle. It offers context for the city’s past and makes a useful addition to a brief walk through the courtyard.

The exhibition takes about 30 minutes to see. If you have more time, Alter Hof can be combined with nearby sights or cafes in the old town.
