At Breitscheidplatz in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church pairs the damaged west tower of a 19th-century Protestant church with a modern building beside it. The preserved ruins recall the destruction of war, while the newer church’s blue glass brings a quieter, contemporary feel inside. Visit the memorial hall to see historical photographs and details about the church, and compare the old structure with the new one. In December, a Christmas market fills the surrounding square with seasonal stalls.

The damaged tower and the modern church

The original Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was built between 1891 and 1895 in a neo-Romanesque style. It was damaged in wartime bombing in 1943, and the surviving west tower was kept as a memorial rather than rebuilt. The ruined tower is also known by the German nickname “der hohle Zahn,” or “the hollow tooth.”

A new church complex was built beside the remains and completed in 1961. The old stonework and the modern buildings form a visible contrast at Breitscheidplatz, near Kurfürstendamm and Berlin Zoo.

Inside the memorial church

The memorial hall displays historical photographs and information about the church’s past. The exhibits include before-and-after images that help show how much of the original building was lost. Inside the newer church, blue glass blocks give the space a distinct blue light.

The memorial hall and church provide a place for reflection on the destruction of war. Headset tours are available for an additional cost. The tower climb is strenuous, so consider your stamina before attempting it.
