Friedhof der Märzgefallenen is a cemetery and memorial in Volkspark Friedrichshain, commemorating people killed in Berlin’s March Revolution of 1848 and the November Revolution of 1918. Text and image panels explain the events, and a nearby container houses a permanent exhibition on the March Revolution and its context. The grounds give you space to reflect before continuing your walk through the park. For more detail on the people buried here, you can arrange a guided tour in advance; check whether the exhibition container will be open during your visit.
A burial ground shaped by the 1848 revolution
Friedhof der Märzgefallenen was established in March 1848 on the highest point of Friedrichshain park. The communal cemetery was created to give a dignified burial place to those killed during the March Revolution in Berlin. From March 22, 1848, to June 17, 1849, 255 people who died in the revolution were buried here.
The plan for the cemetery came from a burial committee and was followed by resolutions from the city council and municipal government. Those involved also sought to recognize the revolution’s importance beyond Berlin, with monuments intended both at the cemetery and in the city centre.
Remembering the dead of November 1918
The grounds also hold the graves of people killed during the November Revolution. Between November 20 and December 29, 1918, 33 people from Berlin were buried here. The site therefore connects two periods of political upheaval, separated by seven decades.
Information panels at the memorial explain the events and their historical context. Together, the graves and explanatory material make this a place to consider the people who died in both revolutions, as well as the wider history of German democracy.
Exhibition and guided visits
A permanent exhibition about the March Revolution is housed in a container near the graves. It provides further information about the Berlin events and their context. The container is not always accessible, so check before planning your visit around it.
You can also explore the cemetery independently using the text and image panels. Guided tours go further into the history of the site and the stories of individual revolutionaries; registration is required. The cemetery lies within Volkspark Friedrichshain, so a visit can be combined with a walk in the park.
