Set in Treptower Park, Archenhold Observatory is a public astronomy museum and observatory dating from the late 19th century. Its centrepiece is the 21-metre Great Refractor, known as the longest pointable telescope in the world. The museum is free to enter, with exhibits on space exploration, planets and meteorites, and you can visit the terrace to see the telescope. Special events and guided tours add a chance to learn from observatory staff and, when conditions and programmes allow, look through telescopes.

The observatory’s landmark instrument is the Great Refractor, also called the Celestial Cannon. At 21 metres long, it is described as the world’s longest pointable telescope. You can see it from the terrace, and some events give visitors a chance to observe objects through telescopes.

Access to the telescope dome and opportunities to view the night sky depend on the programme. Check the schedule before travelling, especially if telescope viewing is the main reason for your visit.

The free museum covers space exploration and planets, with a display of meteorites. Most exhibit text is in German, and English translations are limited. If you need help following a tour or show, ask staff whether they can explain in English; guides have accommodated English-speaking visitors on request.

Guided tours and other activities may require paid admission. The observatory is in Treptower Park, so you can add a walk through the park to your visit.
