Musée Cognacq-Jay is a small art museum in the Hôtel Donon, a historic townhouse at 8 Rue Elzevir in Paris’s Marais. Its collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture, porcelain and decorative objects was assembled by Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jay, founders of La Samaritaine. Look for works by Fragonard, Boucher and Rembrandt alongside unusual pieces such as perfume pistols. The intimate rooms give a glimpse of 18th-century art and aristocratic life without requiring a long visit.

The Cognacq-Jay collection

Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jay built their fortune as founders of the Paris department store La Samaritaine. They assembled the collection in the early 20th century, with a focus on art and decorative objects associated with 18th-century France. After Cognacq’s death, the collection was given to the City of Paris.

The museum brings together paintings, sculpture, furniture, porcelain and other objects. Works by Fragonard, Boucher, Rembrandt, Guardi, Tiepolo and Canaletto appear among the collection’s highlights. The decorative arts have their own appeal: look for finely made furniture and small curiosities, including perfume pistols.

A townhouse in the Marais

The collection is displayed in the Hôtel Donon, a historic residence at 8 Rue Elzevir. Its townhouse setting gives the visit a domestic scale, with rooms arranged around paintings and objects rather than a vast gallery sequence. Accounts of the museum describe paneled rooms in Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, as well as a wooden ceiling and an attic space.

The setting connects the objects to the private collecting habits of Cognacq and Jay. Their interest in the 18th century took shape in the early 1900s, so the displays reflect a later couple’s view of that period, not a collection assembled by an 18th-century household.

What to look for

Take time with the decorative pieces as well as the paintings. Furniture and porcelain sit alongside smaller objects that offer a more personal scale of detail; one notable example is a perfume holder shaped like a pistol. Paintings by Fragonard are another highlight, and the collection also includes works by Boucher and Rembrandt.

Temporary exhibitions add another reason to check what is on view before visiting. Exhibition subjects and displays can change, and the museum’s rooms may be arranged differently between visits. For a focused stop in the Marais, the permanent collection is compact enough to explore without setting aside a full day.
