Parc de Bagatelle

Parc de Bagatelle is a landscaped garden in the Bois de Boulogne, on the western edge of Paris.

Parc de Bagatelle is a landscaped garden in the Bois de Boulogne, on the western edge of Paris. Its rose garden holds 10,000 bushes representing 1,200 varieties, with blooms appearing from spring into autumn. Paths lead past lawns, ponds, waterfalls and the Château de Bagatelle, while a Chinese-style pagoda and roaming peacocks add distinctive sights. It is one of four sites in the Paris Botanical Garden and suits a quiet walk, a picnic or a visit focused on roses and garden design.

A garden built after a wager

The château and park were created in the 18th century after a wager between Marie-Antoinette and the Count of Artois. Construction took just 64 days, with 900 workers involved. The château is also known as the Folie d’Artois.

Today, the grounds bring together designed gardens and natural features. Their paths pass lawns, ponds, small bridges, caves and artificial waterfalls. The château is part of the setting, but the gardens are a central reason to explore the park.

Part of the Paris Botanical Garden

Parc de Bagatelle is one of four sites that make up the Paris Botanical Garden, alongside the Parc Floral de Paris, the Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil and the Arboretum. The botanical collections are presented across these different gardens, with shared signage among the sites.

In Bagatelle, the rose garden is the main draw for plant lovers. Its 10,000 bushes represent 1,200 varieties, including classic and modern roses. The flowers bloom across a long season, with timing depending on the variety. Other gardens and botanical collections add interest along the walk.

Paths, lawns and garden details

The grounds combine formal French-style gardens with winding paths and open green areas. Take time to notice the ponds, waterfalls and caves as you move between garden sections. The Chinese-style pagoda is one of the park’s architectural landmarks, and peacocks roam the grounds.

The lawns offer space to pause or have a picnic. The park also hosts exhibitions and classical music concerts during the summer months, adding cultural events to its garden setting.
