Wesley’s Chapel & Leysian Mission is a Methodist church and museum at 49 City Road in London. Opened in 1778, the chapel is closely connected to John Wesley and the history of Methodism. Inside, look for the painted glass and wooden details, then visit the Museum of Methodism in the basement and Wesley’s former house. The exhibits and video presentations cover the movement’s history, while the house gives a glimpse of English life in Wesley’s time. Ask whether a guide is available to bring the rooms and their stories to life.
A chapel opened in 1778
Wesley’s Chapel stands on City Road and opened in 1778. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, acquired it as his London base. The building has undergone several refurbishments. One damaged the Adam-style ceiling; a later restoration was completed in 1978, when the chapel was officially reopened by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Look around the chapel for its painted glass and wooden decoration. The communion rail has its own later history: it was donated by former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who married in the chapel in 1951.
The Museum of Methodism and Wesley’s house
The Museum of Methodism is in the chapel basement. Its displays include historical exhibits and video presentations, giving visitors material to explore beyond the church itself. The museum covers more than visitors may expect, so set aside time rather than treating it as a brief stop.
Wesley’s former house is also open to visitors. Its rooms and objects offer a view of English life during the period when he lived there, as well as a closer look at his life and work. A guided visit can help explain the history of the house and the items on display. Ask about guide availability when you arrive.
A place for worship and remembrance
The chapel remains a place of worship, and Sunday visitors may be able to attend a service. The site also includes a memorial to Wesleyans who died in the two World Wars. Take time to approach it quietly and respectfully.
Visitors can come for Methodist history, architecture or a period house visit, whether or not they belong to the faith. Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours for the house and museum, and more time if you plan to explore the chapel and attend worship. Weekdays are suggested for a quieter visit.
