The Guards Museum is at Wellington Barracks on Birdcage Walk, close to Buckingham Palace and across from St James’s Park. It traces the history of the five Foot Guards regiments through uniforms, medals, weapons, paintings and personal stories from past conflicts. The compact galleries are packed with information, and an audio guide helps explain the displays. Families can follow a children’s museum trail and try on guard clothing. Outside, guard boxes beside the steps provide a spot for photos.

The five Foot Guards regiments

The museum covers the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards. Its displays follow their history from the 1600s through to the present, using objects and accounts to connect the regiments with conflicts and ceremonies.

Uniforms, medals, firearms, paintings and sculptures make up the collection. Many objects have accompanying stories, including details about notable guardsmen and their service.

Objects and stories in the galleries

Allow time to read the display information as you move through the small museum. A visitor account estimates about an hour for a walk around, with the length depending on how much you read. Seating is available in the galleries.

Audio guide material can be accessed at marked points on some display cases. An introductory video about the Guards is also available, and the audio guide has language options.

A visit with children

Children can follow an educational trail about the regiments, and family activities are available. Some activities have included dressing up in a full dress jacket, bearskin and modern combat helmet. The museum has also held guard-themed family events with crafts and a play area.

The museum is down the steps outside Wellington Barracks. Guard boxes at the top of the steps provide a photo opportunity. Contact the museum before visiting if you need lift access, and plan to use nearby facilities in St James’s Park because there are no toilets on site.
