One Canada Square

One Canada Square is the landmark tower at the centre of Canary Wharf, London’s business district.

One Canada Square is the landmark tower at the centre of Canary Wharf, London’s business district. Completed in 1991, it is known for its steel-clad exterior and distinctive pyramid-shaped roof, which rises above the surrounding buildings. The tower is part of a larger area with a shopping centre, restaurants, public gardens and water features, so you can pair a look at the architecture with food or a walk outdoors. Weekdays bring a busy office crowd; weekends are quieter, with benches around the estate for a pause.

A landmark in Canary Wharf

Completed in 1991, One Canada Square was designed by César Pelli with Adamson Associates and Frederick Gibberd Coombe. It was planned as the centrepiece of the masterplan for Canary Wharf, London’s business district on the Isle of Dogs. Its steel-clad exterior and pyramid-shaped roof make it easy to pick out among the surrounding towers.

The building was once the tallest structure in London and remains one of the city’s most recognisable skyscrapers. Its pointed crown encloses an aircraft warning beacon, a detail that distinguishes the roofline from the flat tops of many nearby buildings.

Explore the surrounding estate

The tower sits within a larger district of offices, shops and restaurants. The shopping centre beneath it has a range of stores, from everyday essentials to fashion, as well as places to eat. Public gardens, water features and seating areas offer a change of pace from the office blocks.

Canary Wharf’s character shifts through the week. On weekdays, office workers fill the walkways; weekends are quieter. The area is served by Canary Wharf station, with above-ground and underground rail connections nearby. If you are coming for an event inside the building, check your route beforehand, as the entrances and security barriers can make the wayfinding confusing.
