The National Gallery sits on Trafalgar Square and traces the history of European painting through more than 2,300 works. Its collection includes paintings by Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Turner, Monet, Rembrandt and Michelangelo. Admission is free, so you can spend time with a few works or follow the collection across different periods and styles. Look up from the paintings, too: the building combines classical and modernist design. For extra context, use the museum’s guide headset or the Smartify app.

A collection spanning centuries

Founded in 1824, the National Gallery now holds more than 2,300 paintings. Its collection covers European painting across centuries, with works by Johannes Vermeer, Claude Monet, Giovanni Bellini, Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt among its highlights. Leonardo da Vinci, Turner and Michelangelo are also represented.

The collection is arranged to make it easier to move between artistic periods and styles. You can focus on a handful of familiar works or use the visit to follow changes in European painting.

Guides and the building

A guide headset adds historical context and stories about individual paintings. If you would rather use your phone, Smartify is another option mentioned for exploring the works.

The gallery’s interior is worth taking in alongside the collection. Its architecture brings together classical and modernist elements, so leave room in your visit to look beyond the frames.
