Benjamin Franklin House is a historic townhouse at 36 Craven Street, near Trafalgar Square, and the only surviving home of Franklin. He lived here for nearly 16 years, from 1757 to 1775. Guided tours explore his time in London and the house’s architecture, including original features such as paneling, beams, windows and uneven floors. You can choose a tour focused on the building or Franklin’s life, or book the theatrical Historical Experience, which brings the period to life through a costumed guide and projected scenes.

Franklin’s London home

Benjamin Franklin lived at 36 Craven Street for nearly 16 years, from 1757 to 1775. He came to London as a colonial agent and spent those years in the townhouse near Trafalgar Square. The building is the only surviving home associated with Franklin, who was also a scientist, writer, inventor and statesman.

The house is now a museum and educational space. A visit connects Franklin’s London years with the rooms he occupied, rather than presenting his life only through objects and text.

The townhouse’s original details

The restored Georgian building is left unfurnished, so its architectural details are easy to see. Look for the 18th-century paneling, beams, bricks, windows and stoves. The uneven floors also reveal the age of the house.

Tours cover both the building and Franklin’s history. If architecture interests you most, choose the architectural tour; other tours focus on Franklin and his time in London.

The Historical Experience

The theatrical Historical Experience tells the story through a costumed character and projected scenes. On weekends, the character of Polly Hewson, the daughter of Franklin’s landlady, interacts with video projections and recorded voices. Special sessions are also run by professional actors.

The house runs educational programmes for children and events. Its guided visit involves close attention to the details of Franklin’s life, so an earlier tour may suit you better if you prefer to explore when you are less tired.
