Its towers and turrets make a striking sight, and the estate has woodland paths, lakeside walks and views across the water. Wray Castle was built in 1840 for James Dawson, a retired doctor from Liverpool. Its towers and battlements give it a castle-like outline, though it is a Victorian Gothic house. The National Trust has owned the house and grounds since 1929.

The estate lies on Windermere’s north-western shore and includes part of the shoreline. Beatrix Potter’s family rented the house as a holiday home during her childhood. That connection links the property to her time in the Lake District.

The grounds can be explored even when the house is inaccessible. Signposted routes lead through woodland and down to the water, with places to pause along the lakeshore. The estate’s specimen trees include Wellingtonia, redwood, Ginkgo biloba, weeping lime and several kinds of beech.

Families can use the open space for a walk or picnic. Self-led activities have included den building, stone skimming and daisy-chain making; sailing taster sessions have also taken place on selected summer days. Check current arrangements before making a plan around a particular activity.

Getting there and planning your visit

Wray Castle is at Low Wray, near Ambleside. Parking on site is limited when the area is busy, and arriving by boat from Bowness-on-Windermere is suggested as an alternative. The pier is signposted from the property and is about a 10-minute walk away. If you are bringing a buggy, be prepared to carry it on and off the boat.

The estate grounds are open year-round, but access to the house has changed during refurbishment. Check the National Trust’s current information before travelling if you want to go inside. A café and toilets are available on site.
