The Columbus Lighthouse is a large concrete monument in eastern Santo Domingo, built to honor Christopher Columbus. It sits on a grassy rise with wide views over the city. Inside, a museum fills long exhibition halls with artifacts and displays from the Americas and from countries around the world, and the building holds a tomb linked to Columbus. The cross-shaped structure is the main draw, and walking the full grounds shows it from several sides. Plan time for both the outside and the museum.
Design and the cross

The main structure is built in a brutalist style, with bare concrete levels that stack up as you walk around it. Up close, its size makes the overall shape hard to read. The cross plan becomes clear from above or from a distance.
The name refers to the light display at the top of the building. On certain occasions each year, it shines a large cross into the sky.
Inside the museum

The interior is split by two long exhibition halls that run parallel to the central hallway. The displays begin with the Americas, with artifacts from the Caribbean, Central America, North America and South America. Another section covers major countries of the world, including China, Germany and Japan.
Many displays include maps, pictures and a short history of each country and its culture. Some of the artifacts were donated to the museum, and others were bought for it. Parts of the interior are cooler than the heat outside, and the way the building is split opens a view of the sky overhead.
Some exhibits are in better condition than others, and a few areas have flickering lights, so take your time through the halls.
The tomb and the grounds
The building holds a tomb that the monument presents as containing some of Christopher Columbus's remains. Visitors can see it as part of the museum visit.
Outside, the names of countries are engraved on the walls. The grounds are open and grassy, and the back of the building is as striking as the front entrance. A walk around the full site shows how the concrete levels meet from each side.
Getting there and getting around
Parking is available on site. The building has an accessible elevator, an accessible restroom and an accessible parking lot. A restaurant is also on site.
The surrounding area is not easy to reach on foot, so a taxi or ride-hailing car is the simpler option for most visitors.
