Odense Zoo sits on the southern edge of Odense, about 2 kilometers from the city center and the train station, next to Munke Mose Park. It is home to more than 2,000 animals from 147 species, spread across a garden of about 36,000 square meters with the Odense River running alongside. Each habitat is built to suit its species' natural surroundings. Plan time for the penguin display, the African savannah, the polar bear area and the treetop bridges.

The zoo opened on 16 May 1930 under the name Odense Dyrehave and took its current name in 1933. It began as a menagerie with a handful of animals.

It was Denmark's first privately owned zoo. In 2008 it was ranked the ninth most popular attraction in Denmark, with more than 400,000 visitors. In more recent years it has grown from a partial amusement park with a children's circus into a zoo with animals from all over the world. In 2013 it was awarded the title of Europe's Best Zoo.

The zoo covers about 42 acres, or 36,000 square meters, in the southern part of Odense. The Odense River runs through the grounds, so you walk beside water as you move between habitats.

The African savannah has zebras, ostriches and large birds in tall grass. The rainforest of South America and the polar bear area are among the main highlights. The tropical house shows colorful birds, and a specially designed aquatic area holds manatees.

Some visitors can get close to giraffes on a special experience, and the zoo's habitats are designed to match each species' natural surroundings.

Shows, tours and close encounters

Presentations and special exhibitions run through the day. The zoo also runs conservation and education programs and is known for its work on animal welfare. Private tours are available for a more focused visit.

The treetop suspension bridges let you see the animals from above. Special experiences bring visitors close to giraffes, tapirs and lemurs, and an island houses skull monkeys.
