People’s Park is a public green space in central Shanghai, beside Nanjing Road and People’s Square. Its paths, ponds, flower beds and rock gardens offer a pause between nearby museums and busy shopping streets. On weekends, the park’s marriage market brings parents who display profiles while seeking potential partners for their adult children. You can also see residents exercising, singing or dancing. The park occupies the former Shanghai Racecourse, and its gardens and trees sit against a backdrop of downtown towers.

From racecourse to public park

People’s Park occupies the former Shanghai Racecourse site in central Shanghai. Horse racing ended after gambling was banned in the late 1940s, and the grounds were later turned into a public park. The park was created in 1952 and forms part of the larger People’s Square area.

The site’s earlier history is also tied to the Shanghai Race Club. The building that now houses the Shanghai History Museum was once the club’s clubhouse. As you walk through the park, the former racecourse setting and the surrounding modern city offer a reminder of how central Shanghai has changed.

Paths, ponds and gardens

The park’s appeal is in its landscaped spaces and everyday use. Paths wind through gardens and rock features, while ponds and planting offer quieter corners between the surrounding streets. Lotus flowers appear in the pond in spring and summer. In autumn, the trees add warm colour against the downtown skyline.

There are places to sit and walk, along with a fountain near the museum. The grounds also provide space for exercise and social gatherings. Residents may sing, dance or practise morning exercises, so a walk can include a glimpse of local park life as well as a rest from the commercial streets nearby.

The weekend marriage market

On weekends, parents and grandparents gather in the park to share profiles for their unmarried adult children and look for potential matches. The practice is commonly called the marriage market. Profiles are displayed along walkways, and some families use umbrellas to post information. It offers a view of family matchmaking in contemporary Shanghai, but the people taking part are there for personal reasons.

If you visit to see the market, move through the area quietly and avoid treating the profiles or participants as a spectacle. The market is most active around midday and into the afternoon. Outside that period, the park remains a place to walk, sit and watch the city’s daily routines.
