U'mista Cultural Centre is in Alert Bay, on Vancouver Island, in a building shaped like a wooden longhouse. Its galleries tell the story of Kwakwaka'wakw culture through masks, carvings, totems and other cultural belongings. The collection includes pieces taken when potlatch ceremonies were prohibited in Canada and later returned through ongoing efforts. The Potlatch area offers a particularly moving part of the visit; photography is not allowed there. Look for seasonal cultural programs and work by First Nations artists in the gift shop.

The centre's building takes its form from a wooden longhouse. Inside, gallery displays bring together cultural belongings connected to Kwakwaka'wakw history and traditions, including masks, carvings and totems.

The presentation gives visitors a way to learn about Indigenous culture and community life through objects and their history. The Potlatch area is a central part of the visit. Photography is not allowed in this space, so take time to experience it without a camera.

The return of cultural belongings

Many of the objects on display were confiscated when potlatch ceremonies were prohibited in Canada. Items were dispersed to museums and collections around the world. U'mista's collection reflects efforts to bring them back and make them accessible in Alert Bay.

The exhibits connect the objects with the history of the Kwakwaka'wakw people and the ceremonies from which they were taken. The centre presents this history through its collection and gallery displays, giving visitors context for the significance of the belongings shown.

Programs and local art
